Fuji Japanese Steak House - Rochester Hills

August 16, 2009

altI had been at Fuji Japanese Steak House restaurant back when it was Kublai Khan.  Now, there is the name change and the menu offers up Chinese, Thai, and Japanese cuisine. Here is my review:

It's been many years since my husband and I tried Fuji Japanese Steak House and we weren't too fond of it back when we tried it, although I can't recall why since it's been so long.  Maybe we're just too spoiled by our favorite at Kwong Tung.

Anyway, I had heard about the Fuji Japanese Steak House sweet and sour chicken being awesome here, so I thought I would give it another try (plus the closer establishments were closed and I just couldn't stand to cook!).

I decided not to get too much food so I stuck with a pint of the chicken which came with a side of rice. I also got the chicken unbreaded and the rice steamed instead of fried, to keep it a little bit on the healthier side. It's a bit tough for me to judge the dish since it was actually my first time trying sweet and sour chicken. The Fuji Japanese Steak House chicken was a good quality. Sometimes, I don't luck out with that. I have had fatty pieces of chicken or those gross tendons, etc. But in this case, these were good chunks of white meat, and I know that for sure because they weren't hiding behind any breading. The sauce was very sweet with a touch of sour. It was pretty good. I think it was probably better than most, I'm just not a huge fan of sweet and sour sauce.

The prices at Fuji Japanese Steak House are ok. I think my bill came to $7.50 or something close. I know I could have gotten it cheaper at other places, but sometimes, you get what you pay for.

Fuji Japanese Steak House packaged the meat in a container and the sauce and rice also in separate containers. I mixed it all together however I liked. I was eating pretty late at night, so I ate half and saved the rest for tomorrow.  I was definitely full enough.

The inside of Fuji Japanese Steak House was nicely done.  If my family was a fan of Japanese food, I would totally give it a try. Fuji Japanese Steak House have the traditional set up of the grill surrounded by the seating and tables. I think kids would get a big kick out of the food being cooked in front of them.

This is the first time and the last time we will be eating at this restaurant. Before we ordered, we presented the waitress the Groupon coupon. This lead us to receiving much less portion of food than normal customers. The waitress never explain how the groupon deal work, even though we made it clear to her that this was our first time. When dinner was ordered, waitress asked if we want "fried rice or white rice"?... sound like we had a choice of either one, without informing us that "fried rice" costs extra for "each person" and IS NOT part of the dinner paid thru Groupon. We picked fried rice. The cooking process was suppose to be entertaining, but it's not. It was long and boring. The 2 male owners were the cooks. Our cook was horrible, he can't even pick up an eggs. He kept dropping thing, and finally gave up and swept them into the corner and threw them away. Food were salty and not tasty at all. Soup tasted like burned onion, then added water and msg. It took the cook so long to cook, when all food were done cooking, the remaining food on the plate was cold and beginning to dry up. The portion is so small that it cover only 75% of the plate (mostly covered by fried rice and vegetables). One of our guest order Scallop dinner. He received 3 scallops... then each were cut into 4 little pieces. So looks like he got 12 little tiny scallop for the "entire meal", actually he received 3 scallops. When dinner was done, we were still hungry. Then the checks came, we had 2 separate checks because we had also purchased one gift coupon for our guest's family. By using the Groupon coupon, we expected to had our dinners already paid for. But to our shocking surprise, each of our check still owe almost $40 (almost $80 for both). I questioned the waitress stating there may be some mistakes with the 2 checks. By using the groupon, I expected the dinner was entirely paid for... especially that we made sure we did not go over the limit of the meals allowed. She stated the fried rice is not part of the deal...even though she didn't tell us when we ordered. (almost $2 per person) All the cook gave us was 1 big bowl of rice, added soy sauce, salt, and pepper, then split it for 8 people. The bill also included the tax on the portion of the bill that was supposed to be discounted. Then it had a scribble at the bottom of each bill for $25. I asked the waitress that I didn't order anything extra $25 beside our meals. She said it's "TIPS" for groupon customers. I spoke to the owner, informing him that I had already paid $86 to Groupon, I didn't expected to have spent another $80 before leaving the restaurant (including $50 tip for using Groupon). I said if I knew I was not going to save money on this deal, I didn't even need to wasted my time purchased this deal thru Groupon. If I want to spend $200 for a meal, I could have just walk in, without going thru Groupon. I question if they were using Groupon to lure customers into their restuarant and then cutting food portion and adding big tip to make up the differences. The owner had no comment. I informed him I will notify Groupon of their practice. Again, the owner had no comment, then walked away (looked like he was being caught this time). Meanwhile, his wife was mean and said she's been doing this all day long to Groupon customers, and no one else complain. I said may be because no one else caught the "tip" in the chinese scribbles at the bottom of the bills. I said after they found they were scammed, they too will never returned to this restaurant again. This turn out to be a horrible, nightmare experience for us and our guests' family. Not to mention, we were scammed for more money before we can even leave that place. Very embarrassing for us, who's intention was to treat our guests to a supposingly "nice" dinner. Very embarrassing for our guest, who ended up paying the entire remaining bills... (total of almost $80) Very dishonest restaurant. Very dishonest deal. What a nightmare!!!!

My experience was just the opposite of the review above. We had wonderful service from Christine and Lee prepared a delicious meal with fun displays of his skills. They did put a 20% tip for the full price of the meal on the bill, but I am sure they have been scammed many times. I did not mind this. There was so much food, that I was able to bring home enough for another meal. Can't wait to return.
