Ever since the closing of Los Cuatro Amigos in the old Family Buggy spot on Rochester Rd., our search was on for a local Mexican restaurant. To our surprise and delight, Miguel's Cantina opened soon after in the same location.
We had an opportunity to have lunch there the other day and learn more about the place.
First and foremost, Miguel's Cantina has nothing at all to do with the previous Mexican restaurant, Los Cuatro Amigos. Miguel's is all new, with all new owners, an entirely redesigned interior, and a menu all its own.

Toast Birmingham celebrated its one year anniversary this past October. Thom Bloom, co-owner, hired a new chef (Executive Chef Jeff Rose) in July who has gradually been changing out the menu... 1-2 items on the dinner menu, then 1 or 2 on the lunch menu, etc. so as to not shock customers and the staff:). Chef Jeff has kept some classics/favorites and now the new menu has been announced. I visited a media tasting and was thoroughly impressed with the atmosphere, food, and drinks. Wow! The drinks! I tried all kinds and they were all good! Toast is the perfect place for an after work get together to unwind with some great finger foods and some drinks that will have you forgetting about the bad week you had.
The atmosphere is very modern, romantic, beautifully decorated and just plain fun. Casual enough for families, and a great match for the perfect date night. It's the type of place that is surrounded with an ambiance that lifts your mood!
Toast serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. One other positive point that I must mention (because I LOVE it) - All of the poultry, beef and pork served at Toast is Certified AllNatural and are free of hormones, antibiotics and steroids!

Today I had the opportunity to visit the Bastone Complex and try food and drinks from all four restaurants. For those of you not familiar with the complex, it is a group of four restaurants under one roof. Each of the restaurants has a different look, feel, menu style, etc. It's an interesting and fun concept and I totally enjoyed it. I can't wait to go back with some friends!
Executive Chef Robert Young joined the Bastone Complex in August and has made many changes to all of the menus, all while incorporating the different styles. When asked how he does it all, he replied "I have my dream job; exactly what I want to do and all in one location."
Here's a summary of each of the restaurants:
Vinotecca Wine Bar & Restaurant, 417 S. Main Street, Royal Oak: Vinotecca is a romantic, fine dining experience. A great date place. It has been recently renovated and is modern, dark (in a good way) and quite cozy. Chef Young came in and completely changed 99% of the menu with new options. My favorites included the roasted red pepper and feta spread and the roasted eggplant and feta spread. Both of these were so good on the

As Crooked Lake freezes over, park staff keeps it smooth for blades.Hit the warming house for some hot chocolate. Then, swing by the cross-country ski rental for an added adventure - or, for the more timid, walk out on the lake's docks and take in the view. Bring your own skates, as there are no rentals. Hours: weather-dependent; 8 a.m.-one-half-hour before sunset daily.
