With the school year coming to an end, there are discussions about how children do a slight rewind during the summer months. My oldest is only in 1st grade, so I don't know to what extent he will lose skills and knowledge. It's a tough call for me to decide whether or not we should push academics during the summer month. For sure, I would never invest in a tutor, unless there was a subject where he fell short at year-end. But for a general daily overview, I am uncertain where I stand.
I don't recall my mom pushing me to do some review and practice work when I was young, but I think the education expectations and requirements are greater these days. I feel pressured to buy my son a review workbook, or to check out library books frequently, etc. I don't want him to feel behind when the next school season begins.
But, part of me thinks it's a shame. Kids look forward to summer break. It is a well deserved break after a busy school year. I would rather the retention be there and, no extra work be necessary; you know, like in a perfect world. I would love if the kids could just play and learn/improve upon social skills.
