Pewabic Pottery in Detroit invites children and families to embark on an artistic adventure during their annual Family Fun Day Tuesday, Aug. 21st from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Free activities include carnival-style art games such as clay target practice, a ceramic fishing game and the building of a clay community.
Pewabic Pottery Family Fun Day is free! Guests can get their hands dirty with a variety of “Make-and-Take” activities including stringing ceramic beads, painting flower pots and decorating ceramic bells to ring in the school year.
This is a time when there are free tours of the pottery throughout the day. Visitors are able to take guided tours through the fabrication studio in which they see how Pewabic iconic pieces are produced in bulk by local artisans. Pewabic education studio provides demonstrations in a variety of techniques in our courtyard and attendees have an opportunity to play with clay, take a spin on the wheel, and try their hand at other creative ceramic practices. It truly is a festival to celebrate our target audience - families, friends and people of all ages. In addition to many free hands on activities including games and face painting, we also have a small number of nominally priced workshops in which participants may sculpt and glaze their own piece. These are then fired and participants are able to pick them up a few weeks later.
Pewabic artists also will be demonstrating the magic of clay wheel throwing, and giving free tours of the pottery at 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
