There are plenty of fun things to do in and around Metro Detroit this weekend. This list will try to highlight some of events - big and small - for kids and families. I'm going to be using this article to post events and activities that are either free or at least family affordable.

Weekend Event: St. Mary's Polish Country Fair
Kickoff the summer with an Oakland County Tradition! The St. Mary's Polish Country Fair offers a carnival midway with thrill rides, a Kids Zone, live entertainment, a Vegas tent and all the Polish cuisine you can eat! Weekend Event: Groveland Oaks Park Campground Memorial Day Weekend Celebration
Groveland Oaks (14555 Dixie Highway, Holly, Michigan). Honor our Veterans and celebrate with bingo, tie dye, patriotic bicycle parade, magic show, face painters, clowns, inflatable kid zone, DJ dance and the Justice Variety band on May 26 and the Rich Eddys Rockin Oldies band on May 27. Weekend Event: Free Woodchips and Compost Day
Orion Oaks County Park (2301 Clarkston Road, Orion Township, MI) is the place to be for free wood chips and compost for your weekend yard projects. Bring tools; shovels, wheelbarrows, etc. All wood chips and compost must be self-loaded manually into pick-up trucks and small trailers. No commercial haulers. Click here for more details.

Weekend Event: Red Oaks Waterpark Opens for the Summer
Red Oaks Waterpark (1455 E. 13 mile Rd, Madison Heights, MI) kicks off the summer season with special early-season hours on May 26th. Hours as follows: May 26 - 28 - 10 a.m. - 7 p.m.  Normal weekend/holiday rates apply. Closed May 29 - 31. June 1 - Opening for summer season with normal hours and rates. Cost is $5 for Rochester Hills residents (proof with vehicle registration) or $10 for non-residents for a daily pass or $30 res/$50 non res for the entire summer season. Weekend Event: Lowe's Free Build and Grow Clinic for Kids
From project basics to giving your child the opportunity to say, "I built it!", the Lowe's Build and Grow kid's clinics are a great way to help build confidence! Bring the kids into any Lowe's store and build a FREE wooden project. Each participant also receives a free apron, goggles, a project themed patch, and a certification of merit upon completion of their project. Memorial Day 2012 from noon-3p
Beverly Hills, Michigan
Weekend Event: Memorial Day Carnival
Beverly Park (18801 Beverly Road, Beverly Hills, MI 48025) will host a carnival following their Memorial Day Parade. Community groups will be sponsoring activities and games, carnival rides will be available for the kids and food will be served in the pavilion. A ceremony will be held at 1:00 p.m. around the flagpole to honor our Veterans for their service to our country.
