Take a guided walk into a 90 acre grassland habitat at Orion Oaks to see some species birds that nest in the grasslands. Wear comfortable shoes, dress for the weather and bring binoculars. Water and coffee will be provided. Meet at the Clarkston Road Parking Area. Oakland Audubon members will be leading this hike. Park entry fee is required.

Oakland County Parks offer some of the best freshwater fishing around, so grab a pole and enjoy the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Free Fishing Weekend on Saturday, June 8 - Sunday June 9, 2013. OCPR parks with fishing lakes include: Addison Oaks, Groveland Oaks, Independence Oaks, Orion Oaks and Rose Oaks.

Oakland Owlets Young Birder's Club Hike
Children ages 10 - 18 and a parent are invited to join the Oakland Owlets Young Birders club for a hike through Independence Oaks County Park. The group will meet at the boat house parking lot and hike along the lakeshore loop. This walk will have some elevations and is 2.4 miles long through both forest and lake habitats to see a wide range of birds. Bring binoculars and wear proper attire for hiking. Oakland County Parks and Recreation is proud to partner with Lathrup Village for BBQ Battle--a BBQ ribs cooking competition on June 15 from 11 a.m. - 7 p.m. The battle is part of the Michigan First Summer In The Village festival June 15 & 16. BBQ Battle is limited to 24 teams on a first-come, first-served basis. Entry fee is $35 per team. Check-in is 8:30 - 9:30 a.m. Competitors may use wood, charcoal or gas. During the 10-day Oakland County Fair, there will be a midway with carnival rides, free circus, free concerts, monster trucks, a demolition derby and exhibits ranging from aerospace to woodworking. Visitors can stroll through many barns to see horses, cattle, sheep, pigs, goats, poultry, dogs, cats, rabbits and even newborn animals in the Miracle of Birth Barn, a fairgoer favorite.
