Is Corporal Punishment in Schools Making a Comeback?

altThe idea of corporal punishment in schools may seem like something out of another era and one of the most controversial methods of child discipline, but spanking or paddling in school - usually with a wooden or fiberglass paddle - is still allowed by law in 19 states. The practice is most prevalent in the Midwest and South.


 

Great Start Collaborative-Oakland 2012 in Review

altGreat Start Collaborative-Oakland is here in our community to assure that all Oakland County families are aware of and have access to early childhood services that prepare children and get them ready to learn.

One of the many services Great Start Collaborative-Oakland offers is the ASQ - an online developmental screening project that helps parents determine if their children need developmental delay support during the ages of 0-5. In 2012, Great Start Collaborative-Oakland succesfully launched the program with over 5,672 screens completed! To check out the free screening, click here.

Public Opinions of Use of Technology in Classrooms

altWith kids around the country heading back to school, SodaHead.com, the web’s largest opinion-based community, asked its users about their thoughts on technology being used in schools, including when tablets and laptops should be allowed, thoughts on cell phones/texting in class and the potential change over to e-Books. In addition, the poll asked respondents about their favorite and least favorite subjects in school and their opinions on the importance of a college education for getting a job.

USDA Makes Mandatory Changes to School Lunches

altThe USDA has recently issued new school lunch / school meal requirements for the National School Lunch and Breakfast Program. These standards will be effective for the 2012-2013 school year. This means students will see some changes this school year in the foods served in school lunches when it comes to nutrition.
