How to get a child to stop biting others

Sunday, 27 September 2009 23:01 Attention: open in a new window. PrintE-mail

My son was a very temporary biter.  When I say temporary, I mean it happened only once when my husband was carrying him one day.  We were stunned and didn't know quite what to do. It never happened again, luckily.

I was chatting with a neighbor one day and she said her son bit another child while at daycare when he was younger (about 2 1/2). I give my neighbor credit here for being extremely responsible in this situation. She immediately asked the day care provider what she should do to prevent this from happening again. The day care worker said she had a suggestion if my neighbor was up for it. She said she should take away all his toys and tell him that he gets a toy back for every day he does not bite anyone.  My neighbor says it worked like a charm! But, like all punishments, you can't waiver. Stay strong and follow through. My neighbor said she locked up all the toys in a separate room, and allowed only books. She took the advice seriously and the problem quickly vanished!
