How to know if your guinea pig is happy

January 15, 2010

My daughter got a guinea pig for Christmas from Santa. It is our first guinea pig, and we have never been around one before now. She makes all kinds of noises and seems shy, so we never know if she is happy, afraid, upset, etc.

We wanted to learn her cues so that we know what to do and respond appropriately. I did some research and came up with a couple of very informative sites done by some seasoned guinea pig owners.

This first site has actual audio. You can listen to guinea pig sounds, and then read the descriptions for what the sounds mean.

This second site has a lot of information about body language and sounds and what the guinea pigs are trying to communicate.

I have had a guinea pig for a while now and I have learned a whole lot.
I know that when I pet my guinea pig (tootsie) in a certain place, she vibrates and makes this purring sound, almost like a cat. I also know that when she is happy, she does something called "popcorn," which is when she jumps up and down and runs all around the cage while she's doing it.
One thing that you can do to make your guinea pig happy is take them out of the cage for about 10 mins. every hour or so... because guinea pigs are very social animals. During that time, just put him/her on the ground and let him/her roam! If they pee, just get lysol and clean it up. If they poo, just get a paper towel and clean it up, since most guinea pig poo is not sticky and runny. The last thing that is good to do is just let him/her sit on your lap while you are watching TV or just sitting.
Most important of all, you must make sure that at ALL TIMES, your baby has food, water, hay, and a chew toy. Occasionally a treat would be good... but just the basics will make him/her happy.

I hope this helped! I know that when I got my guinea pig... I was always trying to find help from people. GOOD LUCK smilies/wink.gif

Hi i see your question and id just say if you have two male guinea pigs they will fight to become the dominate male of the cage . You should never put two males in a cage because they will fight all the time and might become fatal to both of them . I have two females and two males and the females never fight but the males do like i said it is sometimes to be the dominate male or if two guinea pigs are different breed that might happen as well and they might fight over space if they are too big for a cage. I would just buy a separate cage to keep them apart occasionally you should let them out together to socialize and become friends . I hope this information helped . smilies/grin.gif smilies/cheesy.gif smilies/grin.gif smilies/cheesy.gif
