"Birthday cake" solution for children with food allergies

June 24, 2010
I was talking with a friend about my daughter who has Eosiniphilic Esophagitis, a food allergy disease leaving her unable to eat MULTIPLE foods. My daughter's 6th birthday was coming up and I was bummed that she would have another year without a birthday cake. The friend mentioned that she knew someone with the same issue and told me of her solution. This other mom made a tower "cake" using the gift boxes/presents. I was so excited. I knew my daughter would get a kick out of this. I collected rectangular boxes of different sizes that would stack like a wedding cake. I put a present in each and wrapped them all in the same paper. I put play-doh at the top and secured it with ribbon. I carefully inserted some candles into the play-doh. We lit the candles and sang happy birthday - my daughter was thrilled!
