Maybe it's not ideal in their eyes. Maybe they'd rather be swimming at a beach up north. But, you can't disagree that incorporating a school like setting into the summer schedule provides structure into each day. Kids love structure and routine, and having the daily school work with the different stations has kept my kids busy and in a nice routine. I noticed they handled themselves better when they knew what to expect. I was also happy to see the discipline they showed me this week.
I gave them a bit more independence during their work this week. I mainly did this so I could get some work done myself, but found that it really got them thinking things through and problem solving for themselves. Oh yes, how they immediately find a need to ask for assistance if I am standing right there. Now with me in another room, it's a bit more of an effort so they tried more on their own. I also could hear the two talking things through with one another.
This week's field trip was perfect. We did the scavenger hunt at the libary. It was an educationally fun experience. That's the best kind - learning that's fun and doesn't feel like learning. The kids did a great job. Plus, they were so excited to run into some of their friends there as well.
Next week will require a lot of juggling with the schedule as my son heads off to the Detroit Lions Football camp (more on that later).
