Stopping the Nail Biting Habit

January 16, 2009

My son is biting his nails and my daugther peels hers, and I am at a loss here.  I never bit my nails so I don't know how to get them to stop.  Does

anyone have any ideas for how to get them to stop this?  I read somewhere that when you notice them doing it, give them something to do with their hands to distract them, e.g. drawing, or singing a song with hand motions ("The Itsy Bitsy Spider.")  My son hates to color and draw, plus I am not with them while they are at school, so I don't think this is going to work.

Any ideas?

My daughter stopped biting her nails by incentives. I bribed her!!! She got to wear nail polish, I gave her money for her piggy bank, ect. If she got the urge to bite we would clip her nails. Especially when it was time to go to bed she would get up and have me cut her nails. That was her perk. In the beginning it is hard but it gets easier. She loved the rewards and I still reward her. I hope this helps.
