Non-Dairy Ice Cream

July 31, 2008
My daughter has soy and dairy allergies. I have never had any luck finding a decent ice cream type dessert. The Rice Dream "ice cream" tastes awful, and some of them are made on equipment with other milk products, go figure. Anyway, I went to the grand opening of the Whole Foods in Rochester and stumbled across Purely Decadent, an ice cream made with coconut milk. I thought it was worth a shot so I purchased the chocolate flavor. I was very impressed. I have had soy ice cream (my son can eat soy) and was not much of a fan. The Purely Decadent is so much better. The chocolate flavor almost tastes like Mounds flavored ice cream. My daughter is a huge fan and it was so wonderful to see her enjoying a dessert she could eat! There were other flavors, but I don't know how they would taste since you really can taste the coconut with the chocolate flavor.

Hi-

My daughter Madison is anaphylactic dairy. She can have soy, but we've found she does not like soy ice cream as much as the Luigi's Italian Ice cups. They are dairy/soy/ free and taste great. Come in 6 packs- lemon, cherry flavors. Luigi's are always a hit at parties where ice cream and cake are served. I always carry Madison's "medical kit" (Epi pens, benedryl.......ect....) with me because she has contact dairy also.

Another tip for the child who CAN have soy are the Soy Ice Cream Sandwiches. Madison loves those. I will have to find the brand name, but we get them all the time. But only for those who can have soy.

My daughter loves the Italian ice cups, too! We've even made our own by freezing homemade lemonade. The consistency is not as great, but the kids still love it.
