Apple Cider Vinegar health benefits

Thursday, 17 December 2009 00:00 Attention: open in a new window. PrintE-mail

I was shopping at one of my favorite grocery stores lately and overheard some ladies talking about how they lost weight and feel great and haven’t done anything different except for this one thing. I politely interrupted and asked what the secret was.

They explained that they heard that taking organic apple cider vinegar was found to be a great method for weight loss and healing acid reflux. The one lady further explained that she lost about 12 pounds in six weeks and her son who suffers from acid reflux, is now feeling much better. Well, I have have some digestive issues, so I thought I would try it. When I first took it I lost 5 pounds in a couple of weeks.  I'm going to continue taking it for a while because of all the claims. My husband is also taking it because I did some research and it also claims to lower high cholesterol among many other benefits. If you’re interested in trying this out, read below for a summary of the health benefits, as well as the recommended cider to purchase. Whole Foods sells a bigger bottle that is organic and unpasteurized, which is said to be ideal.  Do some research to determine the dose. I read anywhere from 1 tsp to 3 Tbsp 3x/day. I am not going to lie, it tastes awful. But, for me, it’s worth the health benefits!

What are the Benefits of Apple Cider Vinegar?
Natural Apple Cider Vinegar is a wonderful natural cure for a number of ailments which usually require antibiotics and other medications that have a number of side effects. In particular, Apple Cider Vinegar has been known to:

  • Reduce sinus infections and sore throats
  • Balance high cholesterol
  • Cure skin conditions such as acne
  • Protect against food poisoning
  • Fight allergies in both humans and animals
  • Prevent muscle fatigue after exercise
  • Strengthen the immune system
  • Increase stamina
  • Increase metabolism which promotes weight loss
  • Improve digestion and cure constipation
  • Alleviate symptoms of arthritis and gout
  • Prevents bladder stones and urinary tract infections

Natural vinegars that contain the mother have enzymes and minerals that other vinegars in grocery stores may not have due to over-processing, over-heating, and filtration. For this reason, it is recommended that you purchase only Natural Organic Apple Cider Vinegar, with an ideal acidity (pH) level of 5 to 7.

I work for Fleischmann's Vinegar and we usually dump about a cap full into an 8 oz glass of sparling water. Now some disagree but I think it tastes a lot like Champagne smilies/wink.gif

I just found some of the apple cider vinegar at Meijer. It is Fleischmann's brand and is organic, unfiltered, and with The Mother...all the things that are proven to be most effective. It costs $2.99 for a 16 oz. bottle.

Yes, as crazy as it sounds, you drink it! Quickly! It does not taste good and it burns a bit going down, but it's worth it.

You have to take it like a shot of medicine. Putting it in water only prolongs the agony smilies/smiley.gif. I use the little medicine cups that come with my kids' liquid pain relievers. I take it like a shot of tequila, and quickly follow it with some water to help get the taste out of my mouth, and also to help ease the acidity, which may feel like it's a tad rough on your throat. Still worth it.

Lisa, do add water to your vinegar when you drink it? Or do you drink it like a dose of medicane?
Thanks,
Melissa
