We found an allergy-friendly restaurant!

As I have mentioned in previous blogs, my daughter Lindsey was found to have Eosiniphilic Esophagitis, a disease related to multiple food allergies and acid reflux.  Being that she is allergic to so many things, and her pediatrician said she should not be eating any foods with additives (e.g. MSG, citric acid, etc.), eating out was just not an option, until now that is.

I've done a review on HuHot (located in Fraser) already, but, I have much to add.  HuHot had a Father's Day special - Dad eats free - for its members, so we went there for dinner.  FYI - Anyone can sign up to be a member on their website www.huhot.com, and they email you specials.  Anyway, this restaurant is very allergy conscious.  We notified our server that we had food allergies, and the process began.  Our server let the cooks know.  They soaped down an area on the grill and scoured it clean.  Then, they used freshly cleaned spatulas (a different set for each of us allergy ridden soulsSmile) and kept note of which spatulas were for which dish.  All the cooks were made aware of the situation so nobody would accidentally stir up our food with other utensils.  Another point that is just as important, is that there are no additives in their foods.  Everything is fresh.  No MSG or strange ingredients to worry about.  At least, that is what our server told us.

I have tried to go online and check out their menu ingredients, but for some reason it is telling me that the pdf file of the menu and allergen listings is damaged and can't be opened.  It may be my computer so I will try it from another location and see if I can get it to work.  I would like to see if there are any sauces my kids could eat.  Right now, I just basically went with salt and garlic broth, and the kids still ate it up!  They absolutely thought it was so delicious.  I have never seen my daughter eat so much!  Plus, they really enjoyed watching the grill experts cook up the food.  And my son got a kick out of putting money in the tip jar and banging the gong:).

As a mom with children with allergies, I felt safe, comfortable, and relieved at HuHot.  It was nice to not be so nervous.  There was genuine effort and concern by the entire staff to make sure we had a safe experience.  Thank you, HuHot!  We'll definitely be back!!!

I finally got around to contacting bd's about their msg content and they do not add msg to the fresh meats and vegetables, etc. And, there are two sauces that do not have msg. Some of these foods and sauces have naturally occurring msg, but nothing added. You can find all the information on their website at http://www.gomongo.com/menuPDFs/NutritionInfo.pdf

I do love bd's as well...but I heard they add MSG to their foods. I need to look into this to be sure.

That place is okay, but a bit of a drive. bd's Mongolian Grill (Royal Oak, Novi, Auburn Hills...few more in area) has been doing this for years AND has much high quality of ingredients. They will even cook your food in the back, away from the grill, to ensure that nothing contaminates your food. I'm glad you enjoyed HuHot and had a good experience, but recommend you try a higher quality establishment (that, by the way, started right here in Royal Oak).

EXCELLENT points. We always need to be careful. I am going to contact the restaurant's corporate office and ask for the ingredient list and I will post it. I am very curious about the sauces, and the additives. We also need to watch out for cross contamination. What if a customer accidentally uses a ladle from one sauce in another sauce, etc.?

I am glad you have had good experiences with Huhot and allergies, we have found that it really depends on the location and the management/staff at the time (for pretty much all restaurants. And, even though the food line ingredients are all fresh/frozen, the sauces are not. Most Huhots mix them from a powder. They used to be "fresh" but most of the restaurants changed quite a while ago. Just an FYI.

Thanks for the endorsement! We try our best to accommodate different allergies. All our sauces are MSG free, but if you're curious about a specific ingredient or additive, please contact our corporate office at \n This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. We will be able to look over ingredient lists for specific allergens.

Due to the nature of the food line, it's impossible to guarantee you won't come into contact with an allergen, but we do our best to keep your meal separate once it's on the grill.

If you're having problems downloading the allergy PDF from www.huhot.com, please let us know, and we can email a copy.

My daughter is anaphylactic dairy-- which means she will go into anaphylactic shock if she ingests dairy. However, she also has airborne and contact skin allergies to dairy. I'm a member of FAAN and other allergy groups. KiddieKlub in Rochester Hills is a great allergy friendly childcare and entertainment complex for kids. I've taken Madison there and never worried about her allergies. KiddieKlub just went peanut free as of June 15. They are working with allergy groups and having benefits to raise money for FAAN: Food and Allergy Anaphylaxis Network. KiddieKlub is in Rochester Hills at 2897 Crooks Road (just north of Auburn). www.kiddieklub.com I also have an allergy mom blog on momslikeme. If anyone needs any info on food allergy friendly places, please email me at \n This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
