Jazz in the Garden at Meadow Brook Hall makes for an enjoyable evening
I attended Jazz in the Garden on August 19 and it was an outdoor wedding-like experience. As I approached the gardens, I saw the impressive white canopy tent. Inside, there was chandelier style lighting, pleated tent liner for the ceiling, tables with white linens, and white lawn chairs. There was an hors d’oeuvres station and a cash bar to go along with the jazz entertainment.
Birds On a Wire performed beautiful, smooth music. It was a perfect match with the relaxing and scenic view of the golf course right outside the tent, surrounded by the colorful gardens of the hall.

Arts, Beats, & Eats festival director speaks on open carry issue
I contacted Jon Witz, director of Ford Arts, Beats & Eats regarding the open carry dilemma with the upcoming Labor Day weekend festival.OCM: What is the latest update on your stance regarding the open carry issue?
Jon: We're going to continue to take the position that no firearms are allowed, but if the city of Royal Oak can't enforce that, we're sure that there will be a few with handguns. This will be a very small amount of people. The way the state law

OCM interviews Heritage Fest organizers
I sat down with Lorraine McGoldrick and Lois Golden, organizers of the upcoming Rochester Area Heritage Festival to ask some questions about the changes we will see, the lineup of events, and more!
OCM: How does this event differ from the Hertiage Fest in May?
RAHF: This is the same Heritage fest that was held in May. We had traditionally been in the Memorial Day weekend for 32 years. So we're doing the 33rd Rochester Area Heritage Festival at Rochester College on a non-holiday weekend. We had looked at the option for the past 5 years and we felt that it was time to try a different weekend and a different location. If you have really nice weather (Memorial Day) all of your volunteers want to go up north to their cabins so the non-holiday weekend really offered us some new input.
OCM: I think you have made a good choice because now you're not competing at all, even with Arts, Beats & Eats.
School's IN Diary: Week 7
When I first thought to do this summer home education program, I had all these ideas, the neighbors and friends were involved, I was researching curriculum online.... Now that we're in week 7 (which is technically Week 8 but we took the first week off), I see how much it has changed.
I found I was too busy to spend an entire Sunday night drawing up a lesson plan when it worked out just as well to pull a few things together quickly in the morning. I realized this even moreso when I saw that smaller amounts of work were sufficient. Spending so much time trying to put together a full schedule was seeming less necessary.
OAKLAND COUNTY MOMS: Back to school guide
Don't make the same mistakes I've made in the past! Waiting until school starts to get the back to school essentials is like making a Christmas Eve run at Somerset. As hectic as everything seems now, August is a far better time to load up on school supplies and school clothes. I'm more prepared this year and I've put together a guide to help save a little money (and time).
I priced nine different items (items that are usually on the recommended supplies lists provided by the schools) at four different stores — Walmart, Target, Meijer, and Office Max. Whenever possible, I priced the items based on the exact same brand and quantity. All back to school supply sales are not created equal. Shop accordingly! See my chart below.
