Southfield Public Library is offering several events for toddlers, kids and teens throughout the month.

Youth Programs

Story Times
Registration is not required for Story Times. Drop in on the day(s) you would like to attend.

Baby Bounce Story Time

This program introduces books to the very young with simple stories, songs, finger plays, social interaction and playing.
Who:  6 - 18 month olds with caregiver
When:  Tuesdays at 10:00 am None scheduled for June
Where: Space Station Program Room

Toddler Story Time

Toddlers will hear stories, learn finger plays, develop social interaction skills and enjoy free-play time. Limited to 25 toddlers per session.
Who:  1 ½ - 3 year olds, with caregiver
When:  Tuesdays at 11:00 am None scheduled for June
Where: Space Station Program Room

Preschool Story Time

Preschoolers will enjoy fun stories, learn finger plays and sing songs.
Who:  3 - 5 year olds not yet in kindergarten, with caregiver
When:  Thursdays at 10:00 am None scheduled for June
Where: Space Station Program Room

Come Read to Kassie
Kassie is a certified therapy dog who would love to have you read to her. Drop by the Youth Room on Mondays in October and practice reading aloud to Kassie. She loves a good book!  
Who:    Kindergartners - 4th graders
When:  Mondays. July 9, 16 & 30  6:30 – 8:00 pm, July 23 5:30 - 6:45 pm
Where:    Near the Reader’s Treehouse

Youth Summer Reading Program
Join us for the Southfield Public Library Summer Library Program Reading is Our Thing. This reading enrichment program is for children who live or attend school in Southfield or Lathrup Village.  Registration begins on Monday, June 3 and ends Monday, July 8 at the Youth Services Desk. Children must be present to register.

Help the Library better serve you and your friends! We are looking for teens who live or go to school in Southfield or Lathrup Village and will jump in and help improve the Library by:
• Suggesting materials for the Young Adult collection
• Recommending program ideas you and your friends will enjoy
• Assisting with a variety of projects that positively impact the Library, its staff and the entire community
• Helping the Library make your visit the best possible
Who:  6th - 12th graders
When:  Monday  from 7:00 - 8:00 pm None scheduled for June

Wii Game On!
Take turns playing your favorite Wii games. Enjoy board and card games before and after your Wii fun!
Who: 6th - 12th graders
When: Monday, April 29, May 20, June 17 from 4:00 - 5:30 pm

Teen Summer Reading Program
Join us for the Teen Summer Library Program. This year’s theme is Saving Summer - One Book at a Time.
Read great books, win prizes and attend fun programs. Registration starts Monday, June 3 and ends Saturday, July 20. For teens in grades 6 - 12 who live or attend school in Southfield or Lathrup Village.

Summer Reading for Grown Ups
Where can a book take you this summer??
From Saturday, June 1 to Saturday, August 3, we’ll be exploring Oh, The Places You Will Go... When You Read!  Will it be to the south of France?  To Mars?  To a dark and scary place?  Wherever it will be, join in on the fun of Summer Reading for Grownups. Sign up at the 2nd level Fiction Desk, receive your book log and then check back in with the librarians as you read or listen to your books.  For every book read, you’ll get one entry into the Grand Prize drawing.  Four lucky winners will receive a sturdy Friends of the Southfield Library book tote and the chance to fill it to the brim with books from the Friends Book Cellar. The Grand Prize drawing will take place on Monday, August 5.

Kimmie Horne
Native Detroiter Kimmie Horne is a consummate entertainer and she is considered by many to be one of the most outstanding performer & recording artists to emerge from this area in years! Kimmie’s beautiful alto voice coupled with her unmatched ability to perform and entertain puts her in a category of her own.
She features classy blends of Jazz, Pop and Rhythm and Blues and taking her audiences on a journey through time and an electrifying ride through various musical idioms.  Having been compared to such legendary artists as, Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald and Lena Horne, Kimmie’s performances revitalize their collective spirits. Kimmie Horne has the sass of Shirley Bassey, the sensuous whisper of Sade, the octane drive of Josephine Baker and the sultry jazz interpretations of the great ones like Phyllis Hyman and Nina Simone.

Thornetta Davis
For over 20 years this multi-talented native Detroiter has graced and dominated Michigan’s most attended events and wowed audiences all over the world.   She has performed over two hundred shows a year with grace and stamina.  Her voice is strong, commanding, melodic and smooth.  She tells her stories with incredible delivery and leaves her audiences wanting more. Davis will be backed by her great band of Detroit musicians.

Located on the lower level of the Library
Wednesday, June 5 1:30 pm - 5:30 pm
Thursday, June 6 10:00 am - 5:00 pm
Saturday, June 8 10:00 am - 5:00 pm
Show your Friends Membership Card and receive a 10% discount on Book Cellar purchases.

Donations in good condition are accepted year round. Please place books in the book chute by the Circulation Desk along with magazines not older than three months. Do not put audio visual materials down the chute; hand them to staff at the desk. Take large donations to the loading dock on the north side of the Library. Your donations keep our book sales successful!
