Yes, it's still summer. Technically we have another 3 weeks until school starts. What I would expect is for the kids to want to make the most of every last day by spending the each and every minute outside playing together, or with friends, riding bikes, going for walks, whatever. If I had nothing at all to do, I would be finding every way possible to be outside. I know it gets too hot sometimes, so I can see the need to come in once and a while to cool off. But, I am just not seeing the urgency in my kids to get it all in before the summer's over. I know they don't have the same concept of time, but I have tried explaining to them that this fun in the sun won't last forever.
Don't get me wrong. Once outside, they have a great time. And, usually, I don't need to do much convincing to get them to stay outside. But, it would be nice if they woke up in the morning and voiced the desire to go outside first, instead of opting for the plug-ins. Additionally, after coming in from playing outside, they head straight for the TV or computer the moment they walk through the door. And, they would do it for hours if I let them. So, that's when I need to step in and tell them they need to find something else to do. I don't believe in not letting them get any TV time at all. I think it's some great wind down time. Plus, I would be a huge hypocrite - I watch TV all night while working. But how much is too much?
How much computer time and TV do you let your children have on a daily basis? And, are you having a tough time getting the kids to choose outdoor fun before even thinking about turning on the TV?
