Here's the latest big brother news - According to New York City's latest regulations, the Education Department has banned most bake sales, the lucrative if not quite healthy fundraising tool for teams and clubs.
The change is part of a new wellness policy that also limits what can be sold in vending machines and student-run stores.
Roughly 40 percent of the city's elementary and middle school students are overweight or obese, according to the Education Department.
Based on the obesity statistic, I can understand the concern for healthier options, but this is going too far. I watch what I eat every day, but I allow myself to have a treat every now and then. It's called discipline. My parents raised me to be a healthy eater, but to also enjoy life and treat myself.
It is an individual's responsibility to make good choices. Personally, I think there should be a good mix of a selection so that there is something for everyone and there is a greater likelihood to increase sales. I would want and hope that my kids would opt for the healthier choices and not the sweet-laden junk food that would most likely interfere with their ability to concentrate during school, or function well physically at after school activities. But, it's still their choice. So long as I raise them to eat right and keep it healthy, they're on their own to exercise this lesson and make their own choices.
That said, I do think it is unnecessary to have junk food in the schools, and there are plenty of better options out there. I remember as a kid being in the lunch room and reading the signage "You are what you eat." It's true, and I'm not so certain this message is being conveyed as well now as it used to be.
What do you think?
