H1N1 vaccination - toughest decision in a long time

October 15, 2009

Wow, mom always said this parenting thing doesn't come with a manual.  This does not sit well with me. I like situations that can be resolved with clear-cut, concrete answers. That is the furthest thing possible when raising kids. And now, I am up against the most difficult decision I have had to make in a long time...should I or shouldn't I get the H1N1 vaccination for my kids?

Everyone I talk to has an opinion, yet most are still undecided. I think a main reason for this is that there has not been any significant evidence or proof that the vaccination is safe and effective. Who knows if it's been tested thoroughly or if it's even for the exact strain we are trying to defend against? So, what is a parent to do? Do we take our chances and get the shot, hoping it protects our children and does not harm them? Or do we take our chances and not get the vaccination, hoping our children stay safe and do not catch this terrible flu? Either way, it looks like we're taking our chances. And for parents, that's very unsettling.

What are you planning to do for your children? What do you think about getting a flu vaccine?

Here's a link to an interview I had with the Oakland County Health Division regarding the H1N1 vaccine.

I want to immunize my girls (ages 2 & 4). This isn't a normal flu and even the normal flu can kill. The last major flu pandemic was catastrophic and I'm afraid we won't know how bad this is until it's too late. IDK, better to be safe than sorry? I normally skip the seasonal flu, but we're doing that this year too, hopefully next year this will all be over...ugh!
