"Smoking or non?" A phrase of the past?

Thursday, 10 December 2009 18:43 Attention: open in a new window. PrintE-mail

It's been debated for years, and today a statewide smoking ban passed in the Michigan Senate. The ban would take effect in May 2010. It applies to all bars, restaurants and work places, except for the Detroit casinos, cigar bars, tobacco specialty stores, home offices and motor vehicles.

Granholm has said she will sign the bill, and with her signature, Michigan would become the 38th state to institute such a ban.

It's weird to think that we will never again hear a hostess ask, "Smoking or non?" Because I always opted for non, and because I am very sensitive to smoke (even asthmatic with certain brands), I was pretty happy to hear of the ban.

I try to be objective and I typically do not prefer a lot of government interference, but in this case, it helps me out health-wise, so I selfishly am in agreement. I can see how some may think this is a bit "Big Brother"-like. But, I strongly think that the general population should not have to subjected to an unhealthy situation. I would never stay in a situation with my kids if there was smoke involved. I have had to leave public places, move to another table, use an inhaler, etc. after being somewhere where I was exposed to second hand smoke. And, don't get me started on coming home stinking like a chimney or having to rush the kids into in the tub just because our table at the restaurant was close to the smoking section. So, in this scenario, I appreciate the government stepping in.

What do you think?

Interesting point! Years ago I told my husband I wanted to open a non-smoking bowling alley. He told me I was nuts and that it would never survive. Now, we'll finally know the truth!smilies/smiley.gif

Speaking of coming home smelling like a chimney, the two activities that I have always had to avoid are Bingo night and bowling. I am curious to see how these restrictions play into non-smokers abilities to enjoy these activities.
