With the premier of Season 9 of American Idol comes mixed feelings. It is the first time we will experience the show without Paula Abdul. I still have not gotten over her not being on the show. BIG mistake. Also, this season marks the last season we will see Simon Cowell on the show. Cowell, 50, is leaving to help Fox launch an American version of X-Factor with Cowell as executive producer and judge in 2011, and word has it, he's signing Paula Abdul to judge with him. Basically, Simon is American Idol. He's the show. Without him, they've got nothing. So, I hesitantly watched the first episode of Season 9, not knowing how I would feel.
Victoria Beckham was the celebrity guest judge. She did a great job. But, Kara got on my nerves, per usual. Something about her mannerisms or the way she talks just gets to me. And, it just wasn't the same without Paula. She's so kind, a bit wacky, loves the contestants and was perfect in the role. Worse yet, I am left knowing that once this show reaches Hollywood, Ellen Degeneres will join the judging panel. I am not looking forward to that. Adding a comedian with no singing experience diminishes the validity of the show. I love Ellen, but not for this.
My prediction: According to Fox Entertainment president Kevin Reilly, the plan is to have X-Factor in the fall, American Idol in the spring and So You Think You Can Dance in the summer. Even though the shows will be staggered, I predict the viewership of Idol will decline as interest in the show is strained due to the double whammy losses of Paula and Simon.
With regard to Cowell and Abdul working together on X Factor, Cowell maintains that we’ll have to watch and see what happens, but that, “whatever happens I will be working with Paula [Abdul] in some capacity.”
What do you think will happen to American Idol? Will you still watch the show?
