Should we pay our kids for their high achievements?

November 19, 2008

This is a new concept to me, paying children for their high achievements, specifically, good grades and accomplishments in sports. I personally do not agree with the method, even though it may be an attempt to emulate having a job, i.e. you do your work, you get paid. But, the big difference is that 1. these are kids and

2. when working, you don't necessarily get more money when you do a better job. I think we need to go back to the old fashioned pat on the back. Kids love to know we are proud of them, and our words mean so much. Why would we want to spoil our praise by replacing it with a superficial monetary gift. What do you think?
