Basic Rider Course Motorcycle Classes Metro Detroit – Community Colleges and local businesses offer the easiest way to obtain your Michigan Motorcycle Endorsement – often in just one weekend and for the cost of just $50.

I obtained my cycle endorsement through a 17-hour, 1-weekend Basic Rider course at Macomb Community College a few seasons back. Many other local colleges, local adult community enrichment, organizations and motorcycle and powersports dealership also offer similar classes at varying costs and varying lengths per class session.

The course I attended was offered at MCC was through the Detroit-Metro Regional Consortium Motorcycle Safety Education Program designed to teach beginners and new riders necessary safety and skills needed to complete a Michigan Secretary of State written test over the course of 1 weekend. Successful completion of the Basic Rider Course will include a completion card which the Secretary will accept to waive the riding skills test.

Even if you’re an absolute beginner, these courses can get you the required motorcycle endorsement in one weekend. Motorcycles are provided, you just need to bring proper safety equipment – DOT helmet, boots, full-fingered gloves, eye protection, full-length motorcycle riding attire.

This Basic Rider Course Motorcycle Classes use actual full-sized motorcycles – not mini bikes or demo models like other, more expensive classes may offer. For the Basic Rider Course at Macomb Community College, we used Honda and Suzuki 250cc motorcycles. Slightly dinged up but perfectly safe and more than adequate and effective for real-road use.

The class itself is no cakewalk, especially if you’ve never ridden a motorcycle before, but most participants feel comfortable on Sunday when the class is complete. Here’s a basic overview of how it works…

17 Hours Total – 5 hours of online prep before class begins, 5 hours of classroom instruction, 12 hours of course training and evaluation.

Basic Rider Course Motorcycle Class Day 1
Friday is the “class” part of the weekend. On the first day, you dive right into your course book and look for answers to more than 125 motorcycle info and safety questions. This may be done online prior to class starting. The questions are designed to cover what will be on the written portion of your test on Sunday as well as prepare you for the Secretary of State written test you will eventually have to take.

Day 2 is a long, grueling day. You arrive at 8a (or 1p) for blocks of hands-on motorcycle range work in a sectioned-off portion of the parking lot. Don’t worry, they’re not going to put you out on the roads. All of the work will be done in the parking lot. You literally learn to sit on the motorcycle at 8a and by 8:15a you’re riding a motorcycle! There are a series of rapid-fire lessons to practice on the range that get progressively more difficult. For instance, you’ll begin slowly driving 50 feet and braking. Then you’ll progress to turning a simple oval track. By noon you’ll be performing figure-8s on the course… and so on.

Even if you’re not comfortable with a lesson by the time a certain exercise is over, the instructors will move forward to the next lesson. It can difficult to keep up if you have little experience on a motorcycle but instructors are patient and encourage you to get through it.

Basic Rider Course Motorcycle Class Day 3
Day 3 is test day. The range part of the day involves the practice for the skill evaluation test you will have to take to receive your certification completion. You will have to take the written portion of your test after your range practice. After the written, you complete your motorcycle range skill evaluation and then head inside to wrap up class. Typical Day 3 Schedule: Range (skill evaluation prep), written exam, range (skill evaluation test), then wrap up.

For $50 and a full weekend of your time, it’s the quickest and cheapest way I know of to become certified and on your way to motorcycle operator’s license from the Michigan Secretary of State.
