Cranbrook Art Museum Summer Camps 2018

Create Camps at Cranbrook Art Museum in Bloomfield Hills offer daily access to modern and contemporary artworks from around the world! Create Camps teach kids how to look at, talk about, and create art! Each camp is led by ARTISTS, DESIGNERS, ARCHITECTS from the Cranbrook Academy of Art. Imagination and self-expression are encourage in each project, with hands-on activities designed to challenge and inspire. Young artists use design-thinking processes to explore a variety of techniques in drawing, painting, mixed media, and sculpture. All art materials are included in the camp fee.

Cranbrook Art Museum Summer Camps 2018 – Create Camps – By Subject

ARCHITECTURE 101
Learn how architects and designers think about the spaces and places in which we live, work, and play. Students will explore architecture in a hands-on environment, learning from renderings and models in the Museum’s vault as well as campus structures designed by Eliel Saarinen, Albert Kahn, and Rafael Moneo. 

DIY TEXTILE DESIGN
Learn basic fiber design principles and be inspired by DIY designs in PUNK!. Learn about surface embellishment with printing and tinting, and create wearable works of art with a range of techniques including weaving and sewing. 

ECO ART
In this environmentally-minded camp kids create artworks using recycled, sustainable, and natural materials. They’ll explore the intersection of art and nature, learning about artists as environmentalists while building indoors and out with found materials. 

FORM & FUNCTION
Through drawing, model making, individual and group building activities, students will explore ideas of form and space through design thinking. Working with a range of materials to brainstorm and construct dynamic three-dimensional works. 

PAINT & POP
Campers will explore traditional and experimental painting techniques including color theory, still-life, value, and composition. Look at Pop masters in PUNK!. and collection pieces by Andy Warhol, Robert Rauschenberg, and Roy Lichtenstein. 

PUNK CAMP
Campers will explore art and ephemera from the 70s and 80s in our summer exhibition, PUNK!. Looking at renegade music, graphics, fashions and forms of the era, campers will print colorful posters, tees, and create their own musical instruments. 

SCULPT WITH CLAY
Build functional and sculptural ceramic art, while learning basic hand‐building methods and finishing techniques. Glimpse at glazes and scope shapes in the Museum’s ceramics vault. Campers will create with a range of modeling materials, including kiln‐fired clays. 

MINI MAKERS (KINDERGARTEN)
Our half-day summer camps are for students entering kindergarten in the fall. Makers explore in the galleries and vaults – practicing observation skills and learning how to talk about art – before creating hands-on art projects inspired by what they saw!

TEEN STUDIOS (7-9TH)
An interdisciplinary approach to art and design. Great for beginners or those looking to refine their technique. With regular opportunities to explore the collections and grounds at the Cranbrook Art Museum, Teen Studios mix critical thinking skills with material application.

  • Drawing & Painting (June 18-29): Explore value, color, and texture through various painting and drawing mediums including charcoal, pastel, watercolor and acrylic.
  • Fiber & Textiles (July 2-13): Construct wearable works of art, overlapping fashion and art. Examine craft, concept and the relationship between who we are and what we wear.
  • Architecture & Design (July 23-Aug 3): Learn from renderings and models in the collection, as well as and buildings on campus including Saarinen house and Frank Lloyd Wright’s Smith House.
  • Ceramics & Sculpture (Aug 6-17): Experiment with hand-building techniques to create functional and decorative sculptural works using kiln-fired clay and mixed media.

Cranbrook Art Museum Summer Camps 2018 – Create Camps Registration Info

  • Extended care before and after camp is available, starting at 7a and running through 6p.
  • Bus transportation available from selected Metro-Detroit locations including: Birmingham, Bloomfield, Rochester Hills, Royal Oak, and Troy
  • All art supplies and materials are included with camp registration. Limited need‐based scholarships are available.

Day Camp (9a – 3p) – $365 per week ($320 ArtMembers) – 1 and 2 week options available!
