FREE Online College Courses for HS Students During Covid-19

Modern States offers more than 30 FREE online courses for more than 75 Michigan colleges. You can save up to about a year’s worth of college at the traditional college. So you can finish college in three years instead of four, and save lots and lots of time and money. The courses are FREE, and Modern States will pay for your AP or CLEP exam. Think of it as Freshman year for FREE.

OAKLAND COUNTY MOMS EDUCATION ARTICLES & RESOURCES

The past few weeks have been a perfect storm for this around my house. My HS Senior son and HS Sophomore daughter (and everyone else) have been idle education-wise due to coronavirus lockdown. Basically we’re hearing (like everyone else is hearing) that schools will likely shut for the year, students in all grades will advance, and all Seniors will graduate. Most importantly, all the talk of online education likely won’t count for anything. I’m not saying online education isn’t important, what I am saying is…. why not have the HS kids learn while earning FREE college credit?

I had a chance to interview the Founder & CEO of Modern States last year. I checked it out and found it to be very compelling and very “real.” You really CAN earn FREE credits for Freshman Year of college with very few restrictions and limitations. More than 75 schools in Michigan accept the CLEP exam results from Modern States for FREE college credit – MSU, OU, MCC, OCC, Ferris, plus literally 72 more. You can look them up here.

As true as the program is, I had reservations about launching my own HS kids into this endeavor. They were both wrapped up with their HS classes and sports. They both have summer jobs so I felt bad about trying to cram “extra school” into their busy schedules. Enter Covid-19 and now my kids have plenty of time between now and their summer jobs to knock out Freshman year of college. The best part… they’re actually so bored with coronavirus lockdown, they’re now embracing the idea.

Below are excerpts of my original interview with Modern States Founder Steve Klinsky from 2019 to explain (better than I can) how it works.

Lisa LaGrou Oakland County Moms – If I’m understanding correctly, students can take their university of choice’s courses online, and then take an exam that gives them college credit if they pass?

Steve Klinsky, Founder & CEO, Modern States Education Alliance – Yes, the way it works is we’ve set up a website called ModernStates.org and if you go to it, you’d see we hired 32 of the best professors in the country…from Johns Hopkins, Purdue, and other major schools…to teach 32 of the key Freshman courses that we give away online and for free to everyone with free online text books. And, anyone can take them, like a public library of college. When you’re done with those courses, there’s an exam that’s been around for 50 years from the college board (who also does the SAT exams and AP exams). If you pass that exam, there are about 3,000 major colleges in the country that will give you credit for having already completed the course. So, for example, Michigan State or Oakland Community College will say by passing that exam, you have that course done and you don’t have to take it again. You’re one course closer to graduation. You can save up to about a year’s worth of costs at most of the major schools by taking these courses and passing the exam. And, we pay for everything. It’s a totally free program.

Lisa LaGrou Oakland County Moms – What college courses qualify for credit by exam? Is it something that is for the core basic courses or is it something that can extend through an entire college curriculum?

Steve Klinsky, Founder & CEO, Modern States Education Alliance – There are 32 courses. The exam is called the CLEP – College Level Examination Program exam that’s been around for 50 years. It’s in 32 major subjects like microeconomics, or college Algebra, or Chemistry…They’re generally thought of as the Freshman courses but we’ve had people be one credit short of graduating and they’ve used a course to graduate. So, you don’t have to be a Freshman but they’re what you would think of as the major foundational college subjects.

Lisa LaGrou Oakland County Moms – How much of this is paid for? How much can a student save to go this route?

Steve Klinsky, Founder & CEO, Modern States Education Alliance – It’s all paid for by the charity. We give away the courses and the text books online for free. The college exam board fee we’re paying for..for the first 20,000 people. We’ve paid for over 10,000 already. You can save up to about a year’s worth of college at the traditional college. So you can finish in one year instead of two, three years instead of four, and save lots and lots of time and money.

Lisa LaGrou Oakland County Moms – Where can people go to find out more about which colleges grant credit for CLEP exams?

Steve Klinsky, Founder & CEO, Modern States Education Alliance – For every school that you’re interested, go to their admissions catalog online and type in their name e.g. “Michigan State admissions CLEP” they’ll tell you for example what courses Michigan State will accept through exam. And, it’s the same for every school. So, check their admissions catalog. But, if you go to our website, ModernStates.org, it’s all very clearly explained. It’s like a Neflix of college education. You can see the courses, understand how it works, and download whatever you want to use.
