Martin Luther King Day Events 2021 Metro Detroit – Metro Detroit, Michigan events and activities honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. MLK Day 2021 is Monday, January 18. In addition to the celebrations, I’ve also included some school’s out fun things to do for kids.

Milford Weekend Events – March on Main MLK Event Drive Up Rally
Prospect Hill Shopping Center
Instead of hosting the March on Main Street, which has been canceled in order to support public health guidelines on crowd sizes by the Michigan State Department of Health and Human Services, the HV MLK Day Committee will host a Drive-Up MLK Day Rally at Community Sharing Outreach Center at 1p on Sunday, January 17. The event will feature a brief presentation featuring Dr. King’s “I Have a Dream” speech which participants can listen to on their radios, and volunteers will be on hand to accept soup meal donations in support of the food drive. Families are encouraged to attend the rally with signs and banners in their car windows expressing support of the themes associated with Dr. King’s legacy, including peace, nonviolence, justice, and service to the Beloved Community.. Southfield Martin Luther King Jr Day Event – MLK Peace Walk Celebration

Community-wide celebration in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Enjoy a continental breakfast and hear special remarks from guest speakers and city officials. Our theme this year is Operation Cover Me. Afterwards, gather in the gymnasium to make flannel tie blankets for those in need at the Grace Centers of Hope homeless shelter. Westland Martin Luther King Events  –  Annual MLK Day Celebration – Virtual for 2021

The City of Westland’s Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration will take place virtually. The pre-recorded event will consist of a look back at previous celebrations Westland has hosted over the years to honor Dr. King’s legacy. Highlights include excerpts from notable keynote speakers such as Wayne County Sheriff Benny Napoleon, Andrew Humphry of WDIV, Huel Perkins of Fox 2, Honorable Judge Cynthia Stephens, Journalist and Talk Show Host, Mildred Gaddis and Wayne County Community College Superintendent, Dr. Curtis Ivery and others. The event will also showcase past years of musical performances and the City’s Freedom Walks, which were conducted to honor all of those who marched with Dr. King over 50 years ago. Line up for the march starts at 12:30p, and the ceremony commences at 1p with a brief presentation and National Anthem performance. The event kicks off with a light breakfast followed by inspirational performances from students. Participants are encouraged to participate in both on- and off-site service projects. Doors will open at 8a and a shuttle bus will be provided from City Hall to the Westland Public Library where we will begin our Freedom Walk to signify unity at 9a. Constructed from a wealth of archival footage, this Oscar®-nominated documentary follows Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. from 1955 to 1968, in his rise from regional activist to world-renowned leader of the civil rights movement. Rare footage of King’s speeches, protests and arrests are interspersed with scenes of high-profile supporters and opponents of the cause. Restored to full-length by the Library of Congress, the complete version is a national treasure that gives viewers an appreciation of the personal challenges King endured and the cultural legacy he left behind.
