Mex Great Lakes Crossing Review

We visited Mex Mex Great Lakes Crossing in Auburn Hills Michigan to check out the latest sit down restaurant to be welcomed into the mall.

Mex restaurant is top notch in atmosphere and customer service. The interior of Mex restaurant is a perfect blend of modern, traditional, comfort. It has a great Mex feel mixed with the unique looks only a top designer could come up with. The Mex staff is also super friendly. We loved the kind service that was super genuine… none of the “trying too hard/awkward/fake” stuff. They are just really nice people.

The Mex Great Lakes Crossing menu offers traditional selections, prepared in a “gourmet” fashion. Everything is cooked fresh, high quality, full of flavor, and comes with a unique twist. I ordered the fajita bowl with shrimp. It had the best flavors, great veggies including pepper, onion, tomatoes, and zucchini all on a bed of spinach. It was not like any fajitas I’ve ever ordered. My husband ordered the beef burrito and was thought it was excellent as well.

We ordered the Mex chips and salsa with our meal. The chips were “just-made” chips and served warm! They were fantastic. When ordering the chips and salsa, you get to choose 2 salsas from Mex’s four different salsa options – Mex salsa, salsa verde, salsa de Arbol, Arbol XX. Salsa verde has an avocado and tomatillo base and is awesome. The salsa de Arbol is a dark red pureed salsa with bit of smokiness from the charred tomatoes. The Arbol XX is a hotter version of the salsa de Arbol. And, finally, the Mex salsa is more of your traditional blend of chunky fresh tomatoes, cilantro, lime, etc. The salsas were all great, but if I had to place them in order, I’d go with Mex last and the other unique options all tied at the top! And, again, you can’t go wrong with those chips.

There are two customized types of menu options at Mex – The Skillet (available at Bloomfield Hills location) and The Chopped Salad Bowl (available at both locations). Each comes with a check list allowing you to select all of the options you want in your dish, and then you pick your protein. For example, with the skillet, you can pick among the sauteed veggies such as pepper, mushrooms, onions, hash brown potatoes, etc.; veggies to go on top (avocado, basil, etc.); cheeses; sauces like crema, sausage gravy, garlic aioli, etc.; eggs prepared many different ways; hot sauce; and salsa. All accompanied by your choice of meat, or shrimp for an extra fee.

Mex Great Lakes Crossing also offers a full drink menu with wine, beer, cocktails and some very tempting margaritas. Mex also has daily specials, including a kids eat free day on Mondays for children under 8 eating off the children’s menu.

Mex has happy hour Mon-Fri and an outdoor patio for the warmer months.
