The emphasis is on fun, and youths travel from across North America to learn bridge or improve their existing game. Some campers are even picked up from either the Detroit or Flint airport. Campers enjoy amenities that include air-conditioned lodges, classrooms and dining hall, daily cleaning services and an on-site medical center. The staff includes experienced bridge teachers, and counselors covering a wide age range.

Studies have shown that playing bridge develops and improves higher level thinking skills, which carries over to subjects such as math and science. Just as important are the social gains, with players playing in partnerships learning valuable teamwork skills like patience and cooperation.

Friendships are made and bonds developed that because of the nature of bridge partnerships, could last a lifetime. Thanks to the internet, campers can meet someone at camp and continue to play bridge online even if they live in different states.

In addition to bridge, Michigan Youth Bridge Camp will also have a space theme where campers should be able to witness a penumbral lunar eclipse and see Jupiter’s moons.

Bridge is a partnership game using a standard deck of 52 cards dealt equally among four players. The players bid in a coded language to describe their hands to their partners and then take tricks to make their contract. Duplicate contract bridge, in which each competitor or team plays identical hands under similar conditions, is the main form of competitive bridge.

Bridge traces its origins to the British game whist, first played in the 16th century, and may be named for the Galata Bridge in Istanbul, which British soldiers crossed during the Crimean War to reach a coffeehouse where they played cards. Bridge gained popularity in the United States in the 1890s and by the 1940s was played in close to half of all households.

Founded in 1937, the American Contract Bridge League, or ACBL, is the largest bridge organization in the world, serving over 165,000 members, and includes such notables as Bill Gates, Warren Buffett and recent Jeopardy champion James Holzhauer. Members strive to earn masterpoints at club and tournament games and achieve the rank of Life Master (at Michigan Youth Bridge, campers participate in nightly tournaments with the opportunity to earn ACBL masterpoints themselves). The ACBL just recently crowned its youngest Life Master ever at the age of just 22.

Thanks to a generous grant from the ACBL Education Foundation and contributions from local bridge clubs, the cost of Michigan Youth Bridge Camp is well below other residential camps. It’s $425 for those who apply prior to May 15, $450 by June 1 and $500 thereafter.
