Oakland University Summer STEM Camps 2023

Oakland University Summer STEM Camps – OU School of Engineering and Computer Science week-long summer camps for kids grades K-12.

Oakland University’s School of Engineering and Computer Science, in partnership with the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, is excited to offer a variety of STEM camps that will get your child interested in STEM concepts and careers. Students in these camps will spend a week doing fun, engaging, hands-on experiments and activities. Many different types of STEM camps including Engineering Exploration which covers five types of engineering and more specific camps like Alternative Energy, Adventures in Coding, and STEM Entrepreneurship are available.

Oakland University Summer STEM Camps 2023 Ages / Grades

Oakland University Summer STEM Camps are available for students entering K through 12 grades in the fall of 2023.

Grade levels are described as

  • Kindergarten Camp – entering grades K-2nd
  • Elementary School – entering grades 3-5
  • Middle School – entering grades 6-8
  • High School – entering grades 9-10

Week-long camps are Monday through Friday, 8a to 3p, After Camp Care 3p to 5p for an additional $15 charge

Kindergarten Science Adventurer Camp – 2nd camp (K – 2nd Grade)
Dates – June 12 – 16; June 26-30; July 10-14; August 7-11
Children will be exposed to numerous areas of engineering and sciences. They will partake in thermodynamics, physics, natural sciences, and engineering through developmentally appropriate activities. Students will learn to be creative and have fun while still engaging in STEM.

Alternative Energy Elementary
Dates – June 19 to June 23, Middle School – August 7 to August 11 / High School – July 24 to July 28  
Students will construct wind turbines, solar cells, anemometers, and other forms of alternative energy. Students will discuss what energy management is and how it is used in different buildings and companies.

Engineering Exploration (Elementary, Middle School & High School)
Dates – June 26 to June 30 Elementary / July 31 to August 4 Middle School / June 19 to June 23 High School
This camp is designed for students who want to learn about the full variety of core STEM concepts. Different types of engineering are introduced each day in a hands-on, student-centered manner. Students will spend each day performing lab experiments and activities designed to give them a broad view of the different types of engineering offered at Oakland University.

Elementary Coding Camp
Dates – June 19 to June 23
This is an introductory coding course for elementary students. Students will begin using Scratch and Tynker to learn the fundamentals of coding. They will begin with basic coding skills such as designing a maze and work their way up to learning how to design games, edit games, and also learn about possible careers in coding for the future.

Computer Science Middle and High School
Dates – July 24 to 28 Middle School / June 12 to June 16 High School
Students will learn computer programming, website coding and development, app development for mobile devices, and video game design. Modules will include straight programming as well as GUI object-oriented programming. Students will be able to unleash their creativity and take their creations home with them on a memory stick.

Minecraft Basic Elementary and Middle School
Dates – July 10 to 14 Elementary School / August 7 to August 11 Middle School
This course is for students who are only somewhat familiar with Minecraft, either from using it online or in a video game. Students will spend each day in a lab playing the game, but with an educational component to each challenge. Students will be encouraged to share what they created at the end of each day.

Adventures in Coding Middle School Students
Dates – July 5 to July 7 and July 17 to July 21

Students will learn computer programming, website coding and development, and video game design. Students will be able to unleash their creativity in open-ended exercises throughout the week.

Bioengineering Elementary School and Middle School
Dates – July 24-28 Elementary / June 26 to June 30 Middle School
Students will get an overview of what Bioengineering is and how it is used in the real world. Modules will include making a model hand and a virus simulation activity.

Chemical Engineering Elementary School and Middle School
Dates – July 10 to July 14 Elementary / June 26 to June 30 Middle School
Students will get an overview of what Chemical Engineering is and how to properly use lab equipment. With a degree in Chemical Engineering one can obtain a position in a wide array of industries (i.e. oil and gas, energy, food, plastics).

Programming Electro-Mechanical Gadgets Camp Middle School
Dates – June 26 to June 30
This is camp will focus on microprocessor programming including binary coding, simple programming, microprocessor control, interface technology, wiring, and interfacing with simple electrical and mechanical gadgets.

Ground Robotics Elementary and Middle School
Dates – June 12 to June 16 & July 31 to August 4 Elementary / June 19 to June 23 & July 10 to July 14 Middle School
This introductory-level camp is for students who are new to robotics. Students will work with Ozobots, Lego Mindstorm, VEX IQ, and EDR Robots depending on grade level and capability.

NEW – Augmented Reality Camp Middle School
Dates – August 7 to August 11
This camp will allow students to explore end-user experiences and to envision and create both virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) environments. They will utilize oculi to foster their learning and creativity and will have the opportunity to visit and engage with OU Augmented Reality Center.

2023 Math Camps

Equations in Math Elementary
Dates – July 31 to August 4
This course is inspired by and designed for elementary students (entering 3-5th grades in Fall 2023). Students will explore math concepts that are CCSS aligned and are found on the M-Step. Methods taught include multiplication arrays, story problems, input-output tables, and other math reasoning concepts.

Analytical and Creative Problem Middle School
Dates – July 31 to August 4
Employing a “problem-based classroom” teaching approach, the instructor will encourage students to develop new tactics in problem solving with analytical and creative challenges.

Math and Physics Middle School
Dates – July 17 to July 21
Students will learn various concepts of physics, such as the laws of motion, force, acceleration, velocity and energy conversion and conservation. They will use these ideas to construct their own working static and dynamic mechanical structures such as, bridges, catapults, and hydraulic machines.

Camp Invention

Camp Invention – K to 5th – July 17 to July 21
Campers find their own unique voice and discover sound waves in action through reverse engineering, then market their extraordinary inventions with friends as creative entrepreneurs.
