Downtown Auburn Hills Skating Rink (located near the intersection of Auburn Road and Squirrel, Auburn Hills, Michigan)
Skaters are invited to enjoy the rink from 8 am through 10 pm daily, pending weather and ice conditions. Located at Auburn and Squirrel Road next to the Log Cabin, the ice skating rink is FREE and is available on a first-come first-served basis. The Auburn Hills Ice-Skating Rink opens seasonally when conditions are right for ice-skating. Call 248-370-9353 for details. This rink does not offer ice-skate rentals.

Birmingham Outdoor Ice Skating Rink
Outdoor Ice Skating at Birmingham’s Barnum Park (corner of Pierce and Frank streets in Birmingham, MI)
The ice rink at Barnum is non-refrigerated and only open when weather permits. Barnum Park ice-skating is open during daylight hours only. Ice hockey games are permitted from 8a-10a and from 2p-4p. Contact 248-530-1700 or 248-530-1700 for ice-skating conditions. The use of the ice skating rink at Barnum Park is free and “at your own risk”.

Independence Oaks County Park Ice Skating (9501 Sashabaw Road, Clarkston, MI)
As Crooked Lake freezes over, park staff keeps it smooth for blades. Hit the warming house for some hot chocolate. Then, swing by the cross-country ski rental for an added adventure – or, for the more timid, walk out on the lake’s docks and take in the view. Bring your own skates, as there are no rentals. Hours: weather-dependent; 8a-one-half-hour before sunset daily. Call 248-625-0877.

Farmington / Farmington Hills Outdoor Ice Skating Rink
Riley Park Ice Skating Rink (Grand River Avenue at Grove Street, Downtown Farmington)
Riley Park ice rink is open daily, weather permitting. Hours are Sun-Th from 8:30a-10p and Fr-Sa from 8:30a-11p. Skating is free to the public but donations are encouraged to offset costs. Questions and inquiries on ice conditions should be directed to 248-474-5500.

Milford Outdoor Ice Skating Rink
Kensington Metropark (2240 W. Buno Road, Milford, Michigan)
Ice skating – offered at the ice rink located on Kent Lake at the boat rental area, which is lighted evenings. Weather and ice conditions permitting, the ice rink is open weekdays, 11 am to 9 pm. Park hours – 6 am to 10 pm. For ice and snow conditions, contact Kensington Metropark at 1-800-477-3178. Kensington Metropark does not offer ice skate rentals.

Oakland Twp Outdoor Ice Skating Rink
Marsh View Park (3100 Clarkston Road, Oakland Twp, MI)
Marsh View Park ice skating rink is located near the park’s parking lot. Ice skating is unsupervised and ice skate rental is not available. Hockey is prohibited at Marsh View Park. Hours are 10a-5p 7 days a week when ice conditions are perfect for skating. For an update on ice skating conditions, call 248-651-4440 ext 289.

Municipal Park Ice Skating (400 Sixth St., Rochester, Michigan 48307)
The downtown Rochester ice skating pond at Municipal Park is located at the end of Ludlow street in Downtown Rochester, Michigan. The pond is open for ice skating during the winter as long as the ice conditions are suitable. Park entry is free. Municipal Park does not offer ice skate rentals.

Bear Creek Nature Park Ice Skating Rink (740 West Snell, Rochester, Michigan 48306)
Bear Creek Nature Park features an ice skating pond deep inside the park. I highly recommend the trail map to find it as the path system can be confusing for first-time visitors. The pond is also quite a walk from the parking lot so it may not be ideal to use as an ice-skating location. Park entry is free and Bear Creek does not provide ice skate rentals.

Spencer Park / Carter Lake Ice Skating (3701 John R Road, Rochester Hills, Michigan)
Spencer Park in Rochester Hills offers ice skating on their lake. There are two separate areas designated for hockey or ice skating. Admission fee to Spencer Park is required to gain entry and the park won’t open in the winter until ice-conditions are suitable for ice skating. Spencer Park also offers a heated shelter with indoor restrooms. Spencer park entry fee is $10 for non-residents and $5 for residents of Rochester Hills. Call 248-656-4657. Hours – 10a-dusk.

Detroit ZooRoyal Oak Outdoor Ice Skating Rink
The Detroit Zoo (8450 W 10 Mile Road, Royal Oak, MI 48067, 248-541-5717)
Open daily 10:30a–3:30p weather permitting. Located inside the Zoo in front of the penguin center.  A 25-minute skating session is $7 per person ages 4 and older ($3 if you bring your own ice skates).

Exchange Park (Campbell & Montrose between 13 & 14 Mile)
Royal Oak DPS creates and maintains the rinks at various parks in Royal Oak. Free to the public and open for family skating (no hockey). This rink is maintained by a DPS employee who volunteers their own time to take care of it. Call 248-246-3180 for ice conditions to make sure it is open.

Wixom Outdoor Skating Rink
Wixom Civic Center Ice Rink (49015 Pontiac Trail, Wixom, Michigan 48393)
Ice skaters are welcome to use the Wixom Civic Center fountain area for ice skating when it freezes for the winter. The rink is only open when ice conditions allow for skating. I’m told you may want to bring a shovel to clear the ice. Ice skating is free. Bring your own skates. For more info, call 248-624-4557.
