Summer Brain Drain Tips

Summer Brain Drain Tips for Parents – Tips to avoid the “academic summer slide” & “summer brain drain” with Lisa LaGrou of Oakland County Moms and Dr. Frank McGeorge of WDIV / clickondetroit dot com. I was on WDIV with Dr. Frank McGeorge a long time ago discussing helpful tips to keep kids mentally AND physically active during the summer so young minds don’t become lethargic. I know the info is dated, but it holds up well!

WDIV contacted me to do the segment with Dr. Frank McGeorge to discuss strategies to repair the “summer brain drain”. Dr. Frank McGeorge highlights several methods for how to incorporate healthy, educational activities with your children, without them even knowing it. I sat down with Dr. Frank McGeorge to also chat about ways I try to sneak in educational activities with my children.

Summer Brain Drain Tips for Parents

Ideally, elementary school-aged children would have been dedicating one hour each day during the summer for math, reading and writing activities. This would avoid the academic summer slide. However, we all know how the summer can slip away from us and we need to get our kids ready for back to school.

Here are Dr. Frank McGeorge’s Summer Brain Drain Tips

  • Pick board games to play with the family that require strategy or memorization skills
  • Use the upcoming summer Olympics to pick a competing country and take the time to have your child learn more about that country
  • Head outside to have the kids make up their own Olympic games – keep track of scores, times, and overall points
  • Summer reading programs about educational topics the children
  • Have kids handwrite postcards to send to family members about their summer
  • Have the kids plan and execute a lemonade stand
