OAKLAND COUNTY MOMS EDUCATION ARTICLES & RESOURCES

Summer is a great time for children and youth to explore and ignite their passions, have new experiences, get connected to caring adults while parents are at work and develop the confidence and skills to be lifelong learners. Summer programs help bolster a child’s academic and social skill development and address learning loss, also known as “summer slide,” which is a decline in reading ability and other academic skills that can occur over the summer months.

The Summer Spark website is free to use, easy to navigate and provides a clearinghouse of summer learning opportunities across the tri-county region as parents and caregivers search for the best opportunities for their kids. Parents can search the one-stop, comprehensive site for information and resources to fun, educational activities and programs that fit their child’s interests and the family’s schedule by specific criteria such as age, cost, zip code and focus area.

Activities and programs listed at SummerSparkSEM.org include the following focus areas: academic enrichment; STEM (science, technology, engineering and math); life skills; college and career prep; community engagement and leadership; fine arts, crafts and performance; and sports, recreation and wellness.

The list of programs at SummerSparkSEM.org continues to grow and is expected to include more than 300 programs, nearly double the opportunities listed on the site last year.

Supported by United Way for Southeastern Michigan and powered by Youth Development Resource Center, the goal of Summer Spark is to mitigate summer slide, drive literacy rates in metro Detroit and elevate the skills children and youth need to return to school in the fall ready to succeed in the year.
