Oakland County Parks has discontinued or “suspended” its Christmas tree recycling program for 2021 and haven’t brought it back. Here is a list of communities in Oakland County that offer Christmas tree recycling or provide details regarding the disposal of Christmas trees.

Other Oakland County cities and townships have Christmas tree recycling through SOCRRA and through the cities and townships themselves. SOCRRA residents can bring Christmas trees, bags of leaves or brush bundles to SOCRRA Transfer station free of charge. Madison Hts Transfer Station 29470 John R (between 12 Mile and 13 Mile), Troy (995 Coolidge Hwy, Troy, MI 48084) OR Rochester Hills Compost Site (1741 School Rd, Rochester Hills, MI).
Berkley Christmas Tree Recycling – City of Berkley Newsletter “DPW crews will be picking up Christmas trees after the holiday. All decorations, lights, strands, etc. need to be removed before placement at the curb. They will not pick up any plastic bags or stands. Please remove all decorations, lights, stands, etc. prior to placement at the curb. Residents are not required to contact the office for Christmas tree pickup.” ALSO through SOCRRA by appointment or designated dropoff. X
Beverly Hills Christmas Tree Recycling – Per Village of Beverly Hills. Christmas tree chipping begin and last the first full 2 weeks of January. Please remove all lights, tinsel, ornaments, etc. from the trees before placing them at the curb. Please do not place trees in plastic bags. X
Birmingham Christmas Tree Recycling – Christmas trees are being collected through January 28, 2023. A separate service is used for disposal of holiday trees, so collection will not necessarily be at the same time your rubbish is picked up. The trees are ground into wood chips for recycling, so please remove all lights, ornaments, stands, etc. If you used a bag to contain the needles while removing the tree from your house, please remove it and dispose of it in your regular garbage. Clawson Christmas Tree Recycling – Per City of Clawson. “As the holiday season is wrapping up, the Clawson DPW will be picking up natural Christmas trees throughout the month of January. Please place them at the curb with other waste on the regularly scheduled trash day. As a reminder, please remove all decorations (lights, ornaments, tinsel, hooks, etc.), plastic bags, and tree stands.” Please note: Christmas trees may also be taken to the SOCRRA facility at no charge. Ferndale Christmas Tree Recycling – Through SOCRRA the Troy Transfer Station or through regular trash schedule pickups (they accept Christmas trees). X
Hazel Park Christmas Tree Recycling – Per Hazel Park – A contractor will go thru the entire city every Wednesday as weather permits. You do not need to call for collection. Also, through SOCRRA the Troy Transfer Station or through regular trash schedule pickups (they accept Christmas trees). Same as Ferndale. X
Huntington Woods Christmas Tree Recycling – “Christmas trees will be chipped by the Department of Public Works as part of the City’s free chipping service. Christmas trees are chipped on Wednesdays along with other chipping. Be sure all ornaments and tinsel are removed. Remove any tarp or cloth and the stand.” – Also Newsletter X
Lathrup Village MI Christmas Tree Recycling – Per Lathrup Village. Place at curb for chipping. “Christmas trees will be collected as bulk items along with regular garbage.” Also handled through SOCRA. X
Madison Hts Christmas Tree Pick-Up – Per Madison Hts – Call 248-589-2294 for pickup or drop off services offered by Madison Hts DPS. “Continuing with our commitment to be the leader in composting and recycling, we will be collecting your Christmas trees and using our brush chippers to chip the trees into wood chips. The program will begin Christmas week, and will run through mid January.” Pickup for 2023 on normal garbage day and runs through mid-January. X
Northville Christmas Tree Recycling and Disposal – “Christmas trees, wreaths, roping and garland will be collected as trash following the Christmas holiday.” X – www.ci.northville.mi.us
Oak Park Christmas Tree Recycling – “Holiday trees will be collected through the mid-January.” per Oak Park. X
Oxford Christmas Tree Recycling – Hosted by Oxford Twp Parks & Recreation. This is for live trees only. There is an established dropoff location at Seymour Lake Park (2795 Seymour Lake Rd, Oxford Twp, MI 48371). “All trees must be “clean,” meaning there should be NO artificial materials (tinsel, wire, plastic bags, etc.) on them. Only natural trees will be accepted. No artificial trees, please. Trees will be collected through the end of January.” X
Pleasant Ridge Christmas Tree Recycling – Per Pleasant Ridge – “Christmas trees will be picked up on Mondays with regular trash disposal. Residents can place the tree at the curb with the stump facing the street for pickup on any Monday.” If you would like your tree to be recycled you can take it to the SOCRRA recycling drop-off center located at 995 Coolidge. There is no cost to drop your tree off for recycling. X
Rochester Christmas Tree Recycling – Per City of Rochester – “The chipping of Christmas trees will begin the first week of January and will continue on a weekly basis for the month of January. Please leave the tree at the curb and remove all the garland, lights, bulbs and any other decorations. If there are any decorations on the tree, it will not be picked up. In the event of snow, the DPW will re-prioritize efforts and the service will be provided but will be delayed.” O
Rochester Hills Christmas Tree Recycling – The City of Rochester Hills will once again allow its residents to dispose of natural Christmas trees by dropping them off at the Clinton River Watershed Council located at 1115 West Avon Road (south side of Avon, just west of Livernois Road) on the following dates and times only: – December 31, 2022, January 1, 7 & January 8, 2023 from 10a-4p. PER City of Rochester Hills. CURBSIDE RECYCLING OPTION – Under contract with the City of Rochester Hills, GFL Environmental will collect discarded Christmas trees devoid of any ropes, lights, metal, plastic or other hangers during Christmas week and the following three weeks. GFL Environmental will deliver the trees they collect to a compost site rather than a landfill or disposal facility. To have your tree picked up by GFL Environmental you must – Call for a pickup just like the bulk pickup, Call at least 24 hours prior to your regularly scheduled pickup date. Royal Oak Christmas Tree Recycling – Per City of Royal Oak & Newsletter – “Through January 13, a private chipping contractor will collect Christmas trees for recycling on your regular trash day. Place trees separate from trash at the curb by 7a without decorations, lights, stands, and plastic bags. If residents miss curbside Christmas tree collection, they can take trees to SOCRRA, 995 Coolidge Hwy, Troy, for free disposal through March.” X
Troy Christmas Tree Recycling – Per City of Troy – “Christmas trees will be collected beginning December 28 thru January 14, 2021. Place trees at curb before 7am on your collection day. Please remember to remove all lights, ornaments, etc. Christmas trees can also be taken to SOCRRA for no charge – no appointment necessary, proof of residency required.” Call 248-524-3399 for 2023 Info, I couldn’t find any info online.
