If the idea of enjoying a nice dinner and drinks at a scenic Northern Michigan airport and watching the planes come and go from a log cabin-style dining experience sounds fun, well… IT IS!
We discovered Hoppies Landing about 10 years ago on one of our stays in Northern Michigan and we try to make it back every time we head “Up North”.
Hoppies Landing is a bar and family-style restaurant located inside Pellston Regional Airport in Pellston – “The Nation’s Ice Box”. If you’re used to the hustle bustle of Detroit Metro Airport, then you’re in for a treat. The tiny Pellston airport is designed to look like a log-cabin lodge. Yes, it’s a full-functioning airport, it’s just not what you’d call “busy”. The top story of the airport is Hoppies Landing “Food & Spirits”.
The restaurant has a fairly extensive menu that features many common “bar food” items but also some unique dishes.

Hoppies Landing Pellson Menu – Apps Galore
Appetizers are big at Hoppies, you have 15 to choose from… From the “sidewinder fries” shaped like propellers (get it?), to fried calamari… they even have a whitefish PÂTÉ.
Hoppies Menu – Soups & Salads
Hoppies offers 7 large salads – House, Taco, Spring, Chef, Black & Blue (featuring an 8 oz sirloin cut), Caesar, and Wedge. The usual dressings can accompany these. I find the salads aren’t fantastic, but decent and the portions are great.
Hoppies Landing Pellston Menu – Sandwiches & Burgers
A pretty good size lineup of soups and sandwiches await – 5 sandwiches and 8 burgers.
Nothing unusual in the sandwich department outside of “the usuals” (chicken, Reuben, etc) but you can get a nice fish sandwich with your choice of cod, whitefish, or perch. They also have 3 different kinds of Grinders.
The burger lineup features the Olive Burger (a staple of any Northern Michigan bar or restaurant), Smokehouse Burger, and others. Hoppies features Plath’s bacon as a choice on all of their burgers. If you know, you know. If you don’t know, Plath’s Meats is legendary in Up North Michigan!

Hoppies serves pizzas with all typical toppings. Hoppies Original Pizza sauce is quite good. The pizzas I’ve tried from Hoppies are pretty good. Definitely above average for Up North.
Hoppies Landing Pellston Menu – Other Entrées
Here’s where Hoppies separates themselves from “typical bar food”.
The menu features a nice pasta alfredo, rib eye steaks, and delicious fish dinners. I highly recommend the Maple Planked Whitefish. The Great Lakes Lake Perch dish is yummy too.
The Friday Fish Fry at Hoppies is also very good, maybe the best we’ve had in Northern Michigan (tied with Moosejaw Junction in Larks Lake). You can get the Cod Dinner anytime but on Fridays it’s “all you can eat”. Finish your first round of cod and then tell the server how many more pieces you want!
Hoppies Landing Pellston Bar
What’s a decent airport with a bar? Hoppies has a large, rectangular bar when you first walk into the restaurant. There are many signature cocktails on the bar menu as well as a nice selection of reds & whites.
The bar at Hoppies is an OK place to watch a game but Hoppies would be rockin’ if they updated the TVs to MORE plus LARGER. Off to the side you can play some shuffleboard or watch puddle jumpers land and depart. There are also arcade games to enjoy.
Hoppies Landing Pellston has an observation deck overlooking the tarmac. Plus, the dining area has a wall of windows so you can watch the flights come and go. Sure, it’s not a busy airport, but it’s still fun. As a matter of fact, it’s so small there’s only one ticket counter, one seating area, one baggage claim…that’s my kind of travel! Seriously, Pellston Regional Airport looks more like a hunting lodge than an airport. It’s a shock to the system to those who are used to Detroit Metro Airport.
We can’t wait to take the kids when we go back next summer. Hoppies also has a second location on Burt Lake in Cheboygan MI called Hoppies Tavern.
