Jack’s Roadside BBQ Review
We finally had a chance to make it to Jack’s Roadside BBQ. We’ve been waiting a while to review Jack’s because we like to wait a little while to review a recent BBQ restaurant because sometimes the BBQ restaurants in Oakland County close within 2 months of us writing a review. I’m looking at you Concho Pearl Icehouse, Blue Ox, Slows Pontiac, Lockhart’s LO, Sharks BBQ, Zeke’s Rock ‘n Roll BBQ Burning Oak BBQ…. My goodness, I could go on… but I won’t.
Thankfully, I’m optimistic Jack’s Roadside will be able to toughen out any growing pains and hopefully stay with us for a LONG time because… the food is great!
Jack’s Roadside BBQ Review – The Pros
There are a lot of great things to discuss here. Let’s start with the menu, it’s huge. 14 different apps to choose from, more than 15 sandwiches & burger choices, sides galore (the usual plus some great surprises), rice bowls, a signature Loaded Mac ‘n Cheese (ya gotta have one of those), and chili.
I saw some of the burgers coming out to other tables near me and was tempted to go the burger or sandwich route but I couldn’t review a BBQ place without getting a “typical” platter – a platter of 2-3 meats (CHOICE OF – sausage, pulled pork, jerk chicken, brisket, burnt ends, ribs), a couple of sides (I picked Mac ‘n Cheese and Pit Beans), plus cornbread. It’s our baseline order when reviewing a new BBQ place. We have to do it.
Long story short, the BBQ was scrumptious. Sauce choices are a hot mustard, a Sweet Heat, and Jack’s original sauce. My palatte didn’t care for Jack’s signature, but the Sweet Heat more than made up for it. My meats (brisket & sausage) we’re cooked perfectly, the pit beans were flavorful and spicy, and the MnC was creamy and delicious. Thumbs up too for the cornbread, usually something i only nibble on… Jack’s Roadside BBQ has the best cornbread of any we’ve tried.
I love the vastness of the menu, options usually not seen in typical BBQ places will have me coming back to try new things. Speaking of variety, the bar menu has almost as many choices as the food menu. They serve almost 20 signature cocktails from Detroit City Distillery featuring local booze. There are plenty of beer choices – bottled or on tap and wine list is also tremendous. Happy Hour is from 2p-5p Mondays through Fridays
Jack’s Roadside BBQ Review – Minor Cons – I’m Nitpicking
My service wasn’t great, the servers all seemed disinterested. Oh well, you can’t win ’em all.
Jack’s Roadside BBQ Review – Bottom Line
I like to compare / contrast Oakland County BBQ restaurants based on similar restaurants. For this, I’ll compare Jack’s Roadside BBQ to Bad Brad’s (Orion Twp) or to Union Woodshop (Clarkston). Both have an extensive menu and an extensive bar. The Dine-In experience at Bad Brad’s or at Union is a bit better than Jack’s Roadside BBQ, but only because Bad Brad’s & Union have major money invested into their restaurants. With Jack’s Roadside BBQ, the quality of the restaurant hasn’t quite caught up with the incredible quality of the food – at least not yet. I enjoyed the food more at Jack’s Roadside BBQ than I enjoyed the food at Bad Brad’s or the mighty Union Woodshop.
In a nutshell, take your parents or in-laws to Bad Brad’s or Union for the dining experience, take your spouse and kids to Jack’s Roadside for the food.
