Tragedy rocked West Bloomfield Twp in early February as a fire swept through a home and killed 3 children. A 12-year-old boy, a 15-year-old boy, and a 16-year-old girl perished in the fire that swept through the Pembury Lane home and trapped the kids.
Sadly, latest fire-related tragedy in West Bloomfield earlier this month could have been prevented. There weren’t any working smoke alarms in the home. The fire is still under investigation but hopefully we can use this as a way to get a fire safety message out in the public so this doesn’t happen again.

Oakland County Fire Codes
Per City of Rochester Hills Fire and Life Safety Education Jennifer Conklin…
“The current fire code is to have one smoke alarm on each level of the home and in each sleeping area and a carbon monoxide alarm on each level of the home. Both types of devices are only good for 10 years and this goes for hardwired alarms as well as battery only type of devices. Sleeping with the door closed offers a safe fresh air space if the fire should happen at night giving time to hear the smoke alarm go off and make a decision of what to do next.
Having an escape plan and one that is practiced and known by everyone in the home ensures that no one will make a desperate decision that puts someone in a place of more harm that could be deadly.”

The 3 Best Ways To Keep Your Home Protected from Fire
1 – Have working alarms in your home
2 – Close before you doze – below is a video to show the difference between a door open and one closed during a fire
3 – Have an escape plan with a meeting place outside that is practiced and known by everyone in the home either that lives there or is visiting
