Big Time Rush Mom Challen Cates Interview – Challen Cates talks about her career, her family, her winery, and her other hobbies in this interview.
My kids are now fans of the Big Time Rush show that features modern day boy band Big Time Rush. I had the opportunity to interview Challen Cates, the “TV mom” of Big Time Rush. I had a chance to ask Challen Cates about playing a famous TV mom and about life on the set of Big Time Rush.
Lisa LaGrou Oakland County Moms – I want to start with my kids’ new favorite TV show – Big Time Rush. Do you find yourself playing the mom role when the cameras aren’t rolling or is it strictly professional?
Big Time Rush Mom Challen Cates Interview – That’s a good question! I think that they see me as more of a friend. But, I’m so crazy about all of them. They’re such great kids and they really have a special place in my heart, especially Kendall and Sierra. We’re very close and very friendly. I would say that we’re more “friends.” I try to be supportive, I try to be that person they can talk to, and not have any kind of judgement because I want them to feel free to talk to me about anything. And they all have really great parents so they have that all covered.
Lisa LaGrou Oakland County Moms – Which of the talented young actors you work with on Big Time Rush do you think will go the furthest in Hollywood?
Big Time Rush Mom Challen Cates Interview – Well I think they’re all different. I always thought that James will probably have more of a film career. I feel like Kendall (Schmidt) is destined to be a rock star, and Logan (Henderson) should be on a sitcom, and Carlos (Pena) can do all of the above. And, I definitely think that Ciara (Bravo) will have her own show. That’s my take on it.
Lisa LaGrou Oakland County Moms – You’ve been a part of some big TV shows – Desperate Housewives, CSI: NY, Monk, Criminal Minds… What’s it like playing a popular TV mom?
Big Time Rush Mom Challen Cates Interview – It’s fun. It’s so much fun. I feel so fortunate to work on a show that kids love so much. I love that kids come up to me on the street and just throw their arms around me. It’s fantastic because they’re so comfortable being fans. Grown-ups would never do that. However, maybe it wouldn’t be appropriate if they did (laughs).
Lisa LaGrou Oakland County Moms – Tell us about “Say it 2 My Face”, how did you come to support the anti-bullying campaign?
Big Time Rush Mom Challen Cates Interview – It’s such a new thing. It’s a thing we never had to deal with growing up. We had to deal with the old fashioned bullying which was bad enough. But, to have cyber bullying that is out there forever and is so hurtful. It was brought to my attention by a friend of mine. It was her friend that started Say it 2 My Face. It spoke to me because I have two little kids and I know that this is the future and this is something that they are probably going to have to deal with. I just feel like it’s important to educate kids and to educate parents to avoid it all costs and to keep an open dialogue with your parents, if anything is going on, if you’re being a victim of cyber bullying.
Lisa LaGrou Oakland County Moms – Your IMDB profile says that you’re part owner of a winery? Can you tell us about that?
Big Time Rush Mom Challen Cates Interview – My parents started Tantara Winery in 1997. It’s located in Santa Maria, CA on the central coast. We specialize in Pinot Noir. We do 12 different single vineyard Pinot’s. It’s a boutique winery and we have a nice cult following. So when I’m not acting, when I’m not doing stuff in the entertainment business, I’m helping my dad with the winery.
Lisa LaGrou Oakland County Moms – This one is for my kids… do you have any behind the scenes scoop or predictions for the show Big Time Rush?
Big Time Rush Mom Challen Cates Interview – I’m really hoping that there’s going to be a season 4 after the summer tour. They are all so crazy and they are all so fun. It’s remarkable, they’re all really good friends. They go everywhere together. It kind of blows my mind that after all this time, they still want to hang out together. They’re really close. They were not friends before hand. They were all cast into the parts separately and Kendall was the last one that was cast. So the friendships grew out of being together on the show.
