From birth, parents instinctively use music to calm and soothe children, to express love and joy, and to engage and interact. Parents can build on these natural instincts by learning how music can impact child development, improve social skills, and benefit children of all ages. Singing and music play an important role in our culture. You’ll find music present in many aspects of our lives: theater, television, movies, worship, holidays and celebrations.
Birmingham First United Methodist Church is offering a series of early childhood music classes for newborns to children three years of age. Parents and children participate in activities that are playful, interactive and research proven to build a child’s aptitude for music. Bouncing, wiggling, tickling, moving and singing are all activities that might seem ordinary enough. But the science behind them and the brain patterns that are being developed are life-changing. Studies found that musical experiences in childhood can actually accelerate brain development, particularly in the areas of language and reading skills. Music ignites all areas of a child’s development, other benefits of music education and exposure include:
- It helps the body and mind work together
- It helps a child learn the sounds and meaning of words
- Dancing to music helps children build motor skills while allowing them to practice self-expression
- And, music helps strengthen memory skills
- In addition to all of these developmental benefits, music brings us joy
