Borden Park had “state-of-the-art” facilities when it opened in the early 1990s. Sadly, some areas of the park are showing their age. The Sport Court surfaces (hard plastic surfaces designed to protect concrete surfaces) inhibit play with unnatural bounces and overall play and are in dire need of replacement. The baseball diamonds are suitable but the feature field is in need of a scoreboard upgrade to keep up with the more modern fields in Oakland County.
Other amenities of Borden have held up well. The batting cages are dated, but well-maintained and still very functional. The original playscape is long gone and has been replaced with a much nicer, modern one. The natural grass soccer fields and baseball outfields are always watered, well taken care of, and even suitable to host large-scale events. The roller hockey rinks are freshly painted with smooth skating surfaces.
You don’t have to be a total jock to enjoy some features of Borden Park. You’ll see more than your fair share people walking their dogs on the fitness trails. The embankment that surrounds the north end of the park actually makes a great sledding hill – especially for younger ones. Though clearly not designed for sledding, you’ll see lots of kids taking advantage of the hill on snow days.
BORDEN PARK SLED HILL REVIEW / PICS / VIDEO
Borden Park seems poorly planned in hindsight. Nothing is close or convenient to the now dated indoor rest-rooms, parking is everywhere yet isn’t close to anything in particular, attractions aren’t labeled, fitness paths are difficult to find, and the parking situation during Saturday youth soccer games on the mini-fields is downright atrocious.
