Crooked Vine Vineyard and Winery Alanson review, pics, hours, and info. A 38 acre “Up North” winery located in Alanson, Michigan (just north of Petoskey) is part of the Tip of the Mitt American Viticultural Area (AVA) that includes 14 wineries from the Up North area.

The winery is a husband and wife owned winery that came about from a retirement and love of the Northern Michigan Era.

Crooked Vine Vineyard and Winery has beautiful views on 38 acres with outdoor seating and a picturesque view of the land and vineyards. What is so unique and awesome about the up north vineyards is that they make wine from robust grapes that thrive in cold temperatures to produce deep flavors that win national and international awards and recognition.

The wines do not disappoint. If you choose to do a tasting at the winery, it’s orchestrated by the husband/wife team. They walk you through each of the wines and tell the back story. I thought I wouldn’t care for this approach as I typically like to choose the wines I want to taste and then sit back and enjoy them with a friend. But, this experience was very informative and I ended up favoring a white wine, which is rare for me.

You are given a placemat at the tasting that has each wine listed, a pic of the label, and a full description of the wine, its hues, and how it fares on the sweet/dry scale. I loved the detail because it’s everything I like to learn about each wine. It’s all part of the experience…trying to pick out each hint and essence of the different fruits that make up each wine.

The wines at CVV&W have the most intricate and memorable labels that resemble book covers. Each tells a story and has a great local feel. The wine I purchased actually has a pic of one of the cottages you’ll find on US-31.
