OAKLAND COUNTY MOMS BUSINESS REVIEWS

The zoo invited me out to learn more. Here’s what my family and I enjoyed at the Detroit Zoo’s Wild Winter Weekends.

The Wild Winter Weekends offers up a different theme on each weekend. The January theme was Arctic Adventure. All of the crafts and activities at the Ford Education Center focused on the Arctic theme. Children were invited to create polar bear masks, toss bean bags into the cut out hole of the polar bear belly, get arctic tattoos, listen in on arctic adventure zookeeper talks, view ice carvings, listen to music, watch a magician, and more. There was plenty to do that kept the kids busy.

Animals featured at The Detroit Zoo during winter months include… the gray wolves, wolverines, Japanese macaques, tigers, camels, polar bears, arctic foxes and red pandas.  The Zoo also has many indoor areas to explore, including the Edward Mardigian Sr. River Otter Habitat, Matilda R. Wilson Free-Flight Aviary, Butterfly Garden, Holden Reptile Conservation Center, National Amphibian Conservation Center, Great Apes of Harambee and Penguinarium. It’s too cold for the rhinos and giraffes but visitors can still see them in their indoor pens.

The zoo is open during winter months so you’re free to walk around and see the animals. Some of the animals are moved indoors during the cold months and can be viewed at indoor exhibits. What’s great about the Wild Winter Weekends is that it gives families another opportunity to head indoors and warm up with some educational zoo fun.
