Jake’s Wayback Burgers Rochester Hills Review and menu info. Rochester Hills is the first Michigan location for Jake’s Wayback Burgers, a throwback, 50’s-style diner. Jake’s Wayback Burgers opened in the old Crust Pizza location at Barclay Circle and Rochester Rd. in Rochester Hills. We took the whole family to try Jake’s Wayback Burgers to check it out for a review.
There is already stiff competition for the best burger place in Metro Detroit. With 5 Guys, Fuddruckers, Jaws Burger, Burgrz, the similar to Burgrz Smashmouth Burger and a host of other – Jake’s Wayback Burgers in Rochester Hills is the franchise’s first attempt at breaking into the Michigan burger market.
In terms of style and decor, I liken Jake’s Wayback Burgers to the same style of Johnny Rockets (Great Lakes Crossing). Think 50s-style diner or “Arnolds” on Happy Days. It’s not overly kitschy, but I prefer the simple, clean style of Burgrz or Smashburger.
Jake’s Wayback Burgers is not a sit down restaurant. You order at the counter and they bring the food to your table when it’s ready. Everything is made fresh to order so it’s not fast food. It’s actually kind of “slow food” – we had to wait quite a while. But, it’s tasty. Jake’s Wayback Burgers are fresh, never frozen 100% all beef patties.
Jake’s Wayback Burgers Rochester Hills menu has some unique items on there. Most notably, the Triple Triple Triple nine patty burger piled high with cheese on each patty.
Aside from burgers, other options include signature dogs, a turkey club burger, veggie burger, salads, and hand-dipped milkshakes available in several different flavors – mint, coffee, orange cream, etc. There is a burger of the month and a shake of the month, and here’s where Jake’s Wayback Burgers go a bit off the menu with items such as a Cuban Burger that is topped with pulled pork, and a Pineapple milkshake.
You can order your burgers “Jake’s” way and they will come topped with ketchup, mustard, onions, pickles, lettuce and tomato. There are other options to add, including grilled onions, sweet peppers and Wayback Gold Sauce that has a mustard base.
I’ve only been to Jake’s Wayback Burgers Rochester Hills one time, but my guess is that every burger comes with cheese because I asked for a plain double patty burger, and there was cheese on it. So, if you don’t want cheese, you probably need to let them know.
I’m a bit disappointed in the value at Jake’s Wayback Burgers. I’ve been to other burger joints where you get way bigger burgers for the same money. My 10 yr-old son can finish the Double Bacon Jake (two patties, 4 slices of bacon, cheese, and topped Jake’s way) plus some fries and onion rings, whereas he would struggle to finish a similar meal at Burgrz. His burger was less expensive. My husband was a bit disappointed as well when he saw the size of his Cheeeesy Burger. For a family of four, we spent over $50. Jake’s Wayback Burgers is going to have to compete with the local Five Guys and Burgrz restaurants, and it could be a tough battle. My family far preferred the taste and cost of Burgrz by comparison. We also had some service glitches but I don’t hold those against businesses for review purposed – anyone can have poor service once.
You can place your Jake’s Wayback Burgers order online and have it ready for you when you arrive. That’s not a bad option since it seems to take them a good while to whip it all together.
