The park entrance contains a newly renovated large parking lot (for large indoor/outdoor shelter parking and beach parking). The main entrance narrows southward to other facets of the park (the other two, smaller picnic shelter areas). Speaking of new, you’ll notice the freshly paved walking path and bright green paved walking path. You can conveniently enter the park via these paths from surrounding neighborhoods off of S Lake Drive.
Area parks are known for their specialties. Lakeshore Park is mountain bike paradise with an extensive, detailed trail system that spans almost 10 miles. An expert friend told me he is thrilled that the trail offers something for all skill levels and is similar to expert trails he’s encountered in Northern Michigan.
Lakeshore Park Beach
The beach at Lakeshore Park is FREE and open to the public (residents & non) – a rarity in Oakland County. Park in Lakeshore’s main lot and the beach is a short jaunt under a S Lake Shore drive walking tunnel. The result of a recent shore stabilization project has produced soft, level sands. This is not a large beach, but it is clean and offers beautiful views of Walled Lake. There are roped-off areas for swimming (floats are allowed). This is a swim-at-your-own-risk beach IE – NO lifeguards on duty. More beach rules – no dogs, bikes, glass bottles, or booze. Lakeshore Park beach is open 10a-8p from Memorial Day through Labor Day.
Playgrounds and Pavilions
Lakeshore Park offers 3 picnic shelters for rent, each of varying size and the front two feature a playground. The largest, newest shelter is at the front of park and has the largest, newest playground to match. The other shelters/playgrounds toward the rear of the park are smaller but you may prefer peacefulness of being away from the crowded front of the park. The new playgrounds are nice, clean, and modern… but not large and not particularly special. For info on park shelter rental, click here.
NEW Multipurpose Building
As part of the park’s renovations, a beautiful 6,200 square foot multi-purpose building was erected with Library programming and P&R programming in mind. The state-of-the-art building has modern restroom facilities. The building is adjacent to the park’s largest picnic shelter. Parks & Rec programs have already begun using Lakeshore Park with sand volleyball leagues and various nature programs. I’m anxious to see the programs the department uses their new indoor shelter at the park.
