Meadow Brook Writing Camp 2024

Meadow Brook Writing Camp at Meadow Brook Hall on the campus of Oakland University – Kids ages 4-18 can spend weeks this summer exploring curated writing genres under the guidance of award-winning instructors at “America’s Castle” in Rochester – Meadow Brook Hall.

Writing Camp at Meadow Brook Hall provides students the ability to hone their skills as writers, poets, and storytellers through the guidance of award-winning Oakland University professors and docents. The grounds, gardens, and mansion itself will serve as wonderful backdrop for students to create and explore.

In addition to developing their writing skills… students will be able create digital movies to upload, socialize with other campers, and even take creative breaks splashing in the fountain!

Young writers will explore multiple writing genres with award winning professional teachers, touring and exploring the mansion and grounds, exploring Oakland University, splash in the fountain fountain, and immerse themselves with newfound friends.

Meadow Brook Writing Camp 2024

Campers are divided between Grades K-2nd, 3rd through 5th, 6th through 8th, and 9th through 12th. Weekly full day camps from June 24th-July 19. Half day camp from July 22-26th. Registration for 2024 can booked after January 15, 2024 at oakland.edu/mbwp/youthwritingcamps. Ask about a multi-camper or sibling discount on camps. A discount on summer camps is also available through relatives employed as staff of Oakland University.

Meadow Brook Writing Camp Grades K-2

Students are guided using shared reading, reading out loud, shared writing, and create at poetry and literacy stations.

Meadow Brook Hall Writing Camps Grades 3-5

Young authors will tour Meadow Brook mansion and gardens with instructors and doscents and workshop with fellow campers. The children will explore different genres of poetry using mentor texts of fiction, fantasy, mystery, and biographical origins. Students will spend a day of camp rendering their works into digital movies.

Grades 6-8 Writing Camps Include

Burgeoning authors will explore the mansion from 9a-1p and then workshop with fellow writers. Kids grades 6-8 will explore art journaling genres, fantasy genres, dystopian genres, historical genres, and more. Students will spend a day of camp rendering their works into digital films.

Meadow Brook Writing Camp Grades 9-12

High school student campers will explore the mansion and garden from 9a-1p and then workshop with fellow writers. Advanced writing opportunities will include challenging poetry in genres such as art journaling, historical, persona narrative, magical realism, and more. Students will spend a day of camp rendering their works into digital films.

Meadow Brook Hall Summer Writing Camp Experiences Include

  • Explore the multiple gardens and the 110 room mansion with personal narration from Meadow Brook’s expertly trained historian docents
  • Immerse yourself in writing styles in multiple genres such as historical fiction, science fiction, fantasy, poetry, art journaling and personal narrative

  • Publish a digital movie of one of your original works on YouTube
  • Workshop with a one-of-a-kind collaborative community of fellow storytellers and young writers
  • Taking fun breaks splashing and having fun in the fountain
  • Present polished works in the Meadow Brook mansion for your family on the final day of camp
