Moms Using Go Fund Me for Kid’s Birthday Parties – During my most recent Mom Panel on WDIV’s Live in the D, one of the topics we discussed was how some Moms are using Go Fund Me accounts to raise money for extravagant birthday parties for their kids.

When the topic was first thrown out there, I honestly could not believe it (you can see my reaction in the video). It was presented as a means for families to keep up with the Joneses in the children’s birthday party arms race. In my eyes, this is wrong on so many levels.

Go Fund Me accounts are a great way to help someone who has fallen on unexpected tragic times, or who has a valuable invention but no funds to get it started, etc. It seems just about an abusive tactic to use a Go Fund Me account to raise money so little Bobby can have a petting zoo at his birthday party because his rich friends are going all out and he needs to stay in the game.
Needing to raise funds to throw a child an extravagant birthday party is a big sign that maybe you shouldn’t be throwing the extravagant birthday party. I am a firm believer that as a parent, I need to set an important example to my children by living within our means. I don’t see how this teaches children appropriate life lessons. Additionally, it sets high expectations that can’t continue to be met.
Since Go Fund Me began in 2010, nearly $1 million has been raised for birthday parties from more than 20,000 donors! (source) Wow! I surely don’t have $1 million to fund anything… but if I did, I would certainly find legitimately needy causes that could use the money… for saving lives, scientific research, life changing inventions, etc. Not a chocolate fountain, ice sculptures, and ponies. And, I would feel much better knowing that I am contributing to a good cause that will make a difference. A million dollars is a lot of money. A sum I’m sure many needy causes would be thrilled to accept it and put it to good use.
Remember, when it comes to children’s birthday parties – it’s the presence, not the presents!
