Applications are accepted until late February for the following summer positions – Seasonal Program Specialist, Parks & Recreation Program Leader, Parks Helper, Lifeguard, Parks & Recreation Attendant, Seasonal Laborer, Food Service Worker and Second Cook. Positions pay between $9.47 and $13.28 per hour.

Oakland County Parks Lifeguard requirements
- Must be 16 years old and willing to work weekends and holidays
- Ability to complete 200-yard swim using front crawl or breaststroke without resting
- Ability to perform feet-first surface dive and retrieval of a10-pound brick from minimum depth of eight feet
- Ability to tread water for two minutes without using arms
- Must attend and pass a four-day mandatory unpaid International Lifeguard Training Program that includes passing a three-part exam: physical condition, written and hands-on practical. The training is held in March/April

In addition to Oakland County Parks, many communities are seeing the need for more Oakland County Lifeguard jobs. I spoke to Troy Recreation Supervisor Kelly Molinar who manages aquatic programs for the Troy Communty Center and the Troy Aquatic Center about the lifeguard shortages. While Molinar said Troy doesn’t have the same urgency for lifeguards that Oakland County Parks does, she concurred that there is a need to recruit the high schools earlier and earlier each season to fill the number required by Troy Recreation and other Oakland County parks and rec departments that require lifeguards to staff pools.
