Rochester Gym Review – Pics

Rochester Gym review and pics. Rochester Gym is located off of Auburn Road in Rochester Hills MI just east of the Meijer parking lot. I have my own gym in my basement but decided on a short-term Rochester Gym membership due to my basement being remodeled for much of the winter. After nearly 15 years of working out nearly exclusively in the basement, I was anxious to get back to a gym. I couldn’t believe how affordable (dirt cheap, really) my month-to-month membership is – a tremendous bargain.

The current Rochester Gym location once housed an unsuccessful Powerhouse Gym franchise. In fact, much of the original Powerhouse Gym equipment still remains. Rochester Gym seemed to buy the Powerhouse out and keep much of the same equipment. The lockerrooms are the same, even the treadmills are the same. The TVs in front of the treadmills have been (thankfully) updated, but you’d be hard pressed to tell the difference between the old Powerhouse and Rochester Gym.

The similarities between the old Powerhouse and the new Rochester Gym end with the equipment and facilities. Rochester Gym is a fresh, modern approach to an old-school type of lifting experience. Impeccably clean (for an older gym), well-maintained equipment, EXTREMELY friendly staff, and an overall welcoming environment await. In addition to the mountains of of equipment, the gym hosts several well-attended fitness classes – aerobics, boot camps, Zumba, Pilates, etc. They even have a women only gym (mostly circuit training machines) on-site that attaches to the women’s lockerroom. Rochester Gym has free Wifi throughout the gym or to enjoy at their nice lounge area.

For all of the amenities, I’m happy to report that Rochester Gym remains an old-school weightlifters paradise. Plenty of benches, mountains of free-weights, and well-maintained equipment. Even the dated treadmills run as they did when they were brand new. Rochester Gym reminds me of an old Golds Gym or Powerhouse. The only things missing (thankfully) are the Brian Bosworth haircuts and aqua tank tops. Rochester Gym isn’t the biggest gym on the block in terms of square footage. They pack the equipment in and use their space the best they can. There is PLENTY of equipment but, unfortunately, sometimes it feels like it’s hard to manuever through the gym because of the lack of open space.

The clientele at Rochester Gym skews a little youngish, but everyone seems young when you’re in your mid-forties. I enjoy the overall vibe of the gym. No Gymtimidation (which is a myth anyways) and everyone is very helpful. I’ve seen plenty of older people at the gym. Some in fantastic shape, some newbies… overall a great mix of people who are taking fitness seriously.

If you’re looking for state of the art equipment, or you absolutely NEED a waterslide or climbing wall at your gym… you might want to look elsewhere. If you’re looking for a clean place with a great attitude and all the equipment you need to work out seriously, you might want to check out Rochester Gym. I don’t think you’ll be able to beat the price anywhere else in Rochester Hills.
