Safe Fluoride Levels for Children

Safe Fluoride Levels for Children – Parents of babies and toddlers take many precautions when locking away harmful household chemicals but we as parents rarely think about common toothpaste as being harmful.

Chicago Healers Practitioners has provided some valuable family health advice for Oakland County Moms through the years and I thought this would be a helpful reminder for parents about the potential dangers of fluoride for children and reminders about safe fluoride levels for children.

A National Academy of Science showing that excessive fluoridation can lead to dental fluorosis in children younger than eight, an irreversible condition that causes white stains to appear on the teeth as well as the corrosion of dental enamel.

Chicago Healers Practitioner Kevin M. Boehm, DDS, provides some helpful insights and recommendations for parents and their young children in regards to safe fluoride levels for children in drinking water and toothpaste:

  • Check with your local water company to find out the fluoride concentration of your drinking water. If it is more than 2 mg/liter, use an alternative source of water.
  • Be aware that bottled water companies are not required to provide this information on the label. (Another reason not to buy or drink bottled water, in addition to the environmental concerns!)
  • Do not use toothpaste for children younger than 2 years old. Once the first tooth emerges, it should be gently brushed with a soft toothbrush and plain water.
  • Supervise tooth brushing until age 6 to avoid accidental swallowing of a large amount of toothpaste. Limit the toothpaste to a pea-sized portion.
