We’re always expanding our search to see Michigan’s beautiful FALL colors and we’ve gotten spoiled touring Tunnel of Trees (Cross Village / Harbor Springs) every year and figured the only way we might be able to top ToT was to make a trek toward Lake Superior. We love hikes, love fall foliage, and love waterfalls so Tahquamenon was an obvious choice.

MICHIGAN UP NORTH FALL FUN THINGS TO DO

One problem we had was that we didn’t plan out the dates perfectly. The weather cooperated (perfectly) but the week we went… the 2nd Saturday in October… the colors weren’t quite what we wanted them to be. I’d say we were about a week too early for peak Fall foliage colors. But that didn’t spoil our views, or the fun we had at Tahquamenon Falls State Park.

The park features more than 21 miles of nature trails, and they’re nice and rugged. These trails are nothing like the flat, wood-chipped nature trails you might be used to in parks downstate. Get ready for hills, rough terrain… and some of the most beautiful scenery in the “Enchanted Mitten”. PRO-TIP – choose the “Lake Loop Trail” or the “Wilderness Loop” – each check in at more than 5 miles and offer breathtaking views of the river and the falls.

Tahquamenon Falls State Park “Upper Falls” is just 4 miles upstream from the “Lower Falls” so it’s not too long of a hike for you to visit both a short period of time. The Lower Falls has a myriad of 5 smaller falls to check out too. Michigan State Parks did a wonderful job creating many access points and overlooks so you can check out the Falls from a multitude of viewing points. You can also access the river by rowboat rental. It’s amazing to think you could access such a beautiful park simply by acquiring a Michigan State Parks Recreation Passport.

In addition to the falls, Tahquamenon Falls State Park offers camping, cabins, concessions, picnic shelters, winter sports access, and more.

Tahquamenon Falls is a Michigan State Park operated by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources.
